  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Metacam

I have written quite a lot about Alice who has a chronic gut condition and is dependent on medicine to keep her going (metacam, metaclop, zantac, probiotics daily)

She weighs about 1.9kg and her current dose of metacam is 0.3ml a day. I tend to split the dose.
Looking at some other threads, this sounds very low and especially for a bunny who goes into a pain/stasis episode about once a month as a result of her fibrous stomach.

I'm obviously not looking for dosage instructions, just an opinion so I can ask my vet.

Many thanks,

Nicki:)

The dose range for Metacam is 0.3-0.6mg/kg/24hrs. So for the DOG Metacam the dose range would be 0.2-0.4ml/kg/24hrs

As Metacam is a potential gastric irritant that may be why your Vet is prescribing a very low dose.

I never realised they do cat in mg and dog in ml. My vet has recently given me dog instead of the normal cat one so will have to bear this in mind. They do like to confuse things

They dont :?

Dog Metacam is 1.5mg in 1ml

Cat Metacam is 0.5mg in 1ml

Thanks Jane,

That clarifies that she is on an appropriate dose as she is on the dog metacam.

Much appreciated
Nicki
