Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Alopecia and seizure

Young Bun
Hi, my name is Rachel. I just recently obtained a 1 year old female bun, named Olivia. I am unsure of her breed. She was given to me by a friend who could no longer keep her. I recently had to take her to the emergency because she had a seizure, and they also didnt know her breed. I posted in the introductions forum and a few people have said she is a Rex. She is almost 9 pounds, I dont know if she is gonna get any bigger or not. My questions are...
1. The vet did blood work and some tests on her and said there was no infection or anything genetically wrong with her to cause a seizure...so any ideas on what might have caused it? Could it have been stress from moving to a new place (it happened 3 days after I got her)
2. She has a spot of Alopecia on her left shoulder...how do i get her hair to grow back? She has had it since I got her. I havent noticed her picking at it or scratching and it hasnt gotten any bigger....here are some photos

You can see the bald spot on her shoulder

She is definitely a Rex but as for the hairless I'm not sure. It could be mites or lice or perhaps before she came to you she fought with another rabbit and lost the hair that way. Rabbit hair usually grows back very quickly so I'm not sure what could be inhibiting this. Is the skin place pink and smooth or is it flaky and scaly to touch?

Its pink and smooth...some of the hair looks like its trying to grow back. The vet said there was no mites or lice. They dont know whats causing...i dont think my vet knows much about bunnies. He seems to know the bare minimum about them. I take her to the same vet as my cats and dog. Ive had her for about 6 weeks now...

Hmm I'm afraid I'm not sure what it could be. As to your vet would it be possible for you to search online or ask around locally as to where your nearest bunny savvy vet is? Rabbits are generally classed as an exotic species as they have specialist needs dietary and health wise. I can't recommend enough how important a knowledgeable and caring vet is.

I actually researched today and found one exotic pet/pocket pet vet about 45 mins away from me. She has an appt wednesday next week. So hopefully they will give me some answers. Keeping my fingers crossed that it isn't anything major. She is a perfectly happy bunny and is very active. She is such a joy. The only problem I have with her is she is a picky eater. She doesn't like veggies. Ive tried broccoli, romaine, carrots, and pea pods...she doesnt like any of them. The only thing I have found that she likes as a treat are graham crackers

Sometimes if they loose a patch of fur it seems to stay gone until the next moult. If it's started coming through it may grow out soon.

She's definitely a rex, and very pretty! Rexes come in two sizes, but at one year old she will be full grown.

Has she only had one seizure? Can you describe what happened? I know it sounds odd but sometimes rabbits will throw themselves to the floor and roll over on to their side/back quite suddenly and it can look like a fit but they are just relaxing. It's a bit unsettling if your not used to bunnies.

If she has more fits the vet maybe able to give meds to control them, but it may turn out to just be one of those puzzling one offs you never get to the bottom of.

Thank you Tamsin. Thats a little more reassuring to know that it should come back. As for the seizure, I came home and was getting my daughter ready for bed (we had been at my mother in laws). All the sudden I heard a bunch of noise coming from Olivia's cage (i dont let her run loose when Im not home because I have 2 cats and I dont quite trust them with her yet). I went to check on her and she was shaking, legs straight out, tongue hanging out, eyes closed, and drooling. I picked her up and she didnt respond to me. She was very stiff. When I got her to the vet her tongue was still hanging and her eyes were rolling around so they gave her a shot and stabilized her.

Yes they did test her for EC...they also tested her for syphilis and myxomotosis (sp?). Everything came back normal. She hasnt had a seizure since then. No known culprit yet lol
