Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

drooling while eating

Hi,
I have a 5 year old new Zealand rabbit. Over the past year we have been having problems with her while she eats. She will run to her food start eating and then stop. When she stops she starts to drool and her throat seems to flux like she is trying to regurgitate the food. Also, her eye bulge out while she is doing this. At the end of this episode it looks like she starts to chew and then licks her lips and then goes right back to the food and starts eating again, as if nothing happened. She never has multiple episodes during one feeding, nor does she have an episode every time she eats. We have tried all different foods, from organic leafs, to pellets mixed with water to make a porridge. She is bounded with another rabbit who has never had this problem. These episodes also seem to make her sick, since she had pneumonia twice within the same year. We have no idea what could be wrong with her and have seen countless vets who cannot seem to diagnosis it. If anyone has any information on this I would really appreciate it! We are seeing a new vet specialist on Thursday. Thanks!

Has the vet checked her teeth? Rabbits sometimes drool with teeth problems. How is her hay eating? Does she eat fast and stuff her mouth? Sounds a little like Julie when she has a choking episode. Julie eats real fast and stuffs her mouth and has choked several times. Mucus comes out of her nose and mouth and her eyes bulge kinda and she sounds raspy. The mucus will go back in her nose though and bubble if I don't hold her head done. Julie's choking episodes are recurring more frequently and with all different kinds of food. The vets find nothing wrong with her at all. She thinks that Julie just eats too fast and too much at once.

I would suspect problems with teeth. Has she had her teeth examined under GA? Some problems can only be seen under anesthetic.

Just to add to the dental brigade - sounds very much like teeth issues.

Not all dental issues can be seen by a vet unless the rabbit is 'out of it' eg - under a GA.
