  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

(I'm calling the vets tomorrow afternoon to try book an appointment. So don't worry I'm not using here instead of a proper vet examination :))

Over the past few months Trouble has been getting skinnier and skinnier. I've increased what I'm feeding him and added porridge oats but there's not been any weight gain. You can feel his spine easily, there's not alot to him. He's around 6 years old. He's also eating more than Mischief, who's a bigger bun, and she's a fine weight. What could be wrong? What sort of treatment would be involved for them all? I can't think what the possibilities are
As I said, I'm booking him into the vet, I was hoping to get his myxi jab done along with the check-up, but since he's so skinny would that be a risk? I don't mind waiting if that's the case though.

What a worry for you. Weight loss is so hard if they are eating well and acting well. I hope that your vet is able to help with some ideas. I am going through this with foster rabbits at the moment. Have you tried anything like fibreplex or profibre pellets which have some probiotic in them to help rebalance their system? Keep us up to dat with progress, I'll be interested to hear what your vet thinks.

There are many possibilites some more sinister than others, in a rabbit of his age some things are more likely but it really is down to investigations and ruling things out, it is impossible to speculate. I really hope that your vet app goes well. Good luck x

Thanks everyone :) I've not tried anything like fibreplex but I'll wait and see what the vet says. Got him booked in on Thursday :)
