After breakfast clean up.

Lobo

Mama Doe
After giving the parrot her breakfast this morning it was time to clean up.

How can this much mess be created to feed one medium sized parrot? Then it has to be repeated for her evening meal.:)

Breakfast was cooked brown rice with peas and corn, capsicum, carrot, pear, nectarine and papaya all topped with half a passionfruit.

Haha..Love her!!

Last night Ruby had a lump of cauliflower and a dry roasted potato...followed by a piece of toast with peanut butter!!

Well, Ruby's diet is certainly different.

You would think after 30+ years of feeding Eclectus you would get accustomed to the mess.

Darragh is one of our male bunnies and the only one who will come if he is called. Aoife (the parrot) has learnt to say his name and now says "come on Darragh". The poor little man is now getting confused as to who is calling him and why.

Ruby is ok with her little bits!!:lol::lol:Its off my plate...not to mention tomato, her seeds, fruit and other stuff.
Im trying to vary her diet....shes not had a very interesting one with her previous owners and she tends to refuse everything....

Ahhh thats so cute she calls out your rabbits name.

Don't forget Yvette, Ruby loves to call out Gus, Gus, Gus. The cats name. And wants his tail.

I would never get anything done if I had a parrot sharing my home. I love hearing about your birdies though.

We are also having a similar problem getting Aoife to eat the rice and vegetables. As she was a stray we don't know what she had previously been fed but she mostly wants to eat seed. Unfortunately seed should be no more than 20% of her diet as Eclectus are arboeal parrots hardly ever venturing to the ground for seed in the wild. Too much of it can lead to fatty livers and obesity. They also have the longest intestinal tract of all the parrots which suggests they should be restricted on the carbohydrates. We have tried her with cooked dry beans but she just throws them out of the dish as well.

I don't know much about African Grey's diet but I think they are more seed eaters.

Greys can have veg and fruit, either cooked or raw.
Sunflower seeds are fattening, but seed does play a part in diet.
Brown bread or toast, as a treat, is allowed...most table foods arent, but try telling Ruby that!!
If Im having veg, I will let her have whatever she fancies.....apparently warm food encourages hormonal behaviour but Ruby seems ok with it.
Oranges arent allowed due to high acid, and some fruit ie strawberries are doubtful...but all beans and stuff is good.
Have you had a "beak" at the parrot forum?? There is a thread on there with super recipes for birdie bread and stuff...all good for parrots.
Some members have eclectus too....http://www.parrotsocial.co.uk/forum.php

I read recently about warm food encouraging hormonal activity. I think what the writer was saying is the males regurgitate food to feed the hens when they are nesting, or preparing to nest so they correlate warm food with egg laying.

We are trying to stay with the diet developed by our avian specialist vet. It has been tweaked a little over the years but we followed it with the male we had for 33 years. The vet said he was the oldest eccy he had seen so hopefully we can get this girl fully switched over for her health's sake.

I will try and take a look at the recipes on the other forum.

Boxes will encourage hormonal activity in females but Im not sure what Ruby is.....we think female!! I will find out eventually, as it will be useful if she gets ill.
I also have a specialist vet for Ruby...but I also take advice from other experienced grey owners....

Ive stopped the wrong things I was doing.Monkey nuts, that sort of thing.I also got hold of a seed that contains limited sunflowers seeds, thus Ruby now eats all of the seed and not just the sunflowers.Talk about junkie!!!

You might like to have a look at this website for the parrot toys, there are so many. This is the rescue that arranged for us to adopt Aoife and we have bought a few bits and pieces to make toys for her.

Thats useful....Thanks.There is also Northern Parrots, another site I forgot the name (which I got from Parrot social forum) and a parrot rescue/boarding place near me which sells all things parroty....
