  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sprained leg

New Kit
My Buck house rabbit called Pawpaw injured himself on Sunday, we were doing the hovering and as usual he and Murphy our Doe were hiding out in the cage until the nasty yellow noisy thing went away. For some reason he freaked out and jumped out and onto the sofa and then tried to jump back into the lower section, twisting his back and landing badly. When he came out eventually he was unable to hop and just walked on tip toes like they do when they sneak up on an new thing on the living room floor. he also kept walking backwards into corners rather than go in front first.

After examining him I was sure it was not hip displacement or a break etc.

We gave him some Metacam we always have a stock due to occasional stasis issues. He perked up still hobbling around.
Saw the vet on Monday and after a really thorough exam she says he has sprained his right rear leg and that it will get better on its own, and that we should try and limit his movements easier said than done.

What I wanted to know from other members is how long does it take to get better and any tips to help him out.

Sorry for the long post I just wanted to make sure everyone had all the facts.

Is he still receiving daily Metacam ?

Has there been any improvement at all ?

It is not really possible to answer your 'how long' question as every case will be different. But I would certainly expect to see a good bit of improvement after a couple of days rest and anti-inflammatories.

We only gave him Metacam once and the next day I noticed a bit of diarrhoea , although he has Metacam when ever he gets a bit of GI which he often suffers from. The vet said she would not prescribe anti inflams as they would not help the diarrhoea.
So far he is improving and stretches out his legs out flat when he is resting he still walks rather than hops.

Im guessing that the diarrhoea may have been down to stress as he has it a little still but it is only very slight and he eats and drinks like normal.
