Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sore Hock?

I'd try get a photo but Thumper is very figity, I was lucky enough to get a close look at it though. I noticed at the back of one foot he had a small dark pink/light red mark on him. It's about 1cm in diameter and there isn't any fur on that area. He's a mini lop and in great health otherwise but I just happened to notice it as he was bouncing through the grass. They're usually kept on concrete slabs with hay on half of it.....but the hay gets cold/damp easily even thought the run is covered and no rain can get to it. It doesn't look badly sore, he isn't acting or moving any differently, I just wondered what I could do. My mind is saying to keep his foot padded and dry, e.g. on a dry cushioned surface like hay etc....but that seems to prove dificult....any ideas?

Sounds like a callous at the moment, not yet a sore hock so don't worry too much. Callouses are extremely common and most buns have them on their heel tips. But yes, you may want to rethink the substrate and environment - the only crucial place is where bunny rests up as this is when weight is on the hock. Also reduce other risk factors, bunny's weight, nail length, keeping litter areas dry as urine scalds etc.

I've now done that :) Can't afford any more till pay day in a few days though so for now they're only allowed on the matts and in their hutch...the rest of the run is temporarily blocked off as it's nasty cold concrete. I checked them all today, it's both of Thumpers feet, and a tiny amount on 2 other buns....Blossom seems to have gotten away with it luckily!
