  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Thin bun

Okay so I went to feed Selina tonight and yesterday she looked absolutely fine and then today she looks a bit skinny around the back and I can feel her spine through her fur. I'm really worried that she was fine one minute but looks skinny the next. I've always been able to feel her bones but I don't think I've noticed her looking thinner than usual. I'm hoping that its just the way she was positioned but is this normal?

I don't think it's normal, but I'm no expert! I've never really been able to feel my buns bones I don't think. (Except for Lilah, but she was a sickly bunny. :()

Oh god I was worried you'd say that :( I am just going to go and see her again (she lives in a shed outside) because I'm starting to really worry.

I'm really sorry I didn't mean to worry you, :(. Lilah probably had something wrong with her heart, she was a fair bit smaller than her sister and underdeveloped. Lilah's bones became very noticeable very quickly, the day she passed away her spine felt like it went up like an arrow and her legs felt very fragile. I felt as if I was going to break her when I was holding her.

Unless Selina's lost a lot of weight I wouldn't worry, but I'd take her to the vet for a check up xx

Thanks for the post. I had reduced her pellet intake by half so will take it back up to what it was for a week and then if I still notice she is looking a little thin I will make an appointment. When I went to check on her just a minute ago she didn't look as thin but I could still feel her bones.
