Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Eye Help

Hi,

I have a two year old lop called Stewie, for the last three weeks he has had runny eyes. We have been to the vet and he was put on a 5 day course of drops. The vet checked his teeth and squeezed his tear ducts (stewie hated this and bit the vet!) The vet said he ducts were fine and his teeth were ok, after the course of drops we took him back the vet gave him the all clear but he isn't right still. I can't see any improvement in his eyes and don't know what to do now. I changed the sawdust we were using in case this was the problem but 6 days later he is still weepy. Under his eye feels almost powdery when you rub it. I wondered if anyone could help at all.

I am at the only good rabbit vet in my area but he has clearly missed something:( Other than wet eyes he is his normal self, eating and playing etc. Any advise would be appreciated.

If you put up a thread in 'Rabbit Chat' asking for the best rabbit savvy vet closer to you, you may find your vet isn't the most savvy in the area :)

Re the issue itself, it's possible this is dental related still. Tooth roots can push up into the jaw and then the nasal/eye area, causing infections. This cannot be found upon examination, but only under xray. This is something that may be required to determine the issue.

Hope this helps :)

Hi,

Just an update, Stewie has been back to the vets and had his tear ducts flushed. Fingers crossed this does the trick. I am feeling much more confident, i saw a different vet within the same practice and he did the dye test which was supposed to have come out his nose if his ducts were clear but it didn't it ran back down his cheeks after two mins.

They managed to do the flushing without sedating him so he is back home already, he's had a cuddle and now, in typical Stewie fashion, is now sulking under the table :)

Thank you for all your advice and reassurance, i hated knowing something is wrong, you feel helpless, especially when they don't get it right first time.

Diane
