  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

vet wont spay till 6 months?

My two girls are almost 5 months and have started a bit of friendly chasing/humping in the last few days and although its all friendly now I'm worried they will fight so i rang my vet and explained and asked if they would spay any sooner and they said no and just that they would advise seperating if they do fight :( I don't want to seperate them :(

Is this right* or am I getting bad advice? I'm really worried now...

Some vets won't spay until 6 months old, as not all development of the sexual organs have occured always.

A rabbit savvy vet will do so sometimes, based on situation.

If you want a second opinion, may i suggest you start a thread in rabbit chat asking for "Rabbit Savvy vet in <your area here>"

Where I work we don't normally spay before 6 months, we will do if there is a reason (i.e hormonal behaviour) and as long as they are over 1kg in body weight.

Rabbits can run about and follow each other for fun, but serious chasing, or chasing combined with humping is dominance behaviour and, as far as I know, never "friendly". :?
I agree with the above, if you do want a second opinion as for recommendations on here and you may find a vet who will spay now, but my only advice is to keep a very close eye and be prepared to separate. My does were fine one day, humping the next, and then suddenly fighting in the space of about 5 days. :(
