Terrible snuffles

Fayelou

Alpha Buck
Hi all

I had posted about this in chat but not had a response.

Please help me I am so very worried and I am at work today untul 7:30.

my bun has previously been on 0.1ml metacam for 5 days with no improvement with snuffles and then 0.5ml of baytril twice a day for 10 days, saw a big improvement but she has been off the med now for the last 10 days ish and the last 2 days she has beeen so so snotty and sneezing.

Fine in herself (hormones have just started though so lots of humping and stamping!) eating , drinking, pooing and weeing.

She is also on day 3 of 10 of panacur for worms (which went after the second day).

Please help, she is booked in for vaccinations on 19th November but I am so worried.

Will she be ok until I get home :(

I gave her 0.1ml of metacam this morning as had some left over.

Please help

It sounds, to me, like she may need a longer course of antibiotics and also a more effective antibiotic than Baytril. I would suggest asking for a culture and sensitivity test on the snot/discharge and then work out from there what she could have that would be effective.

If she was mine, I would not get her vaccinated this weekend, I don't think, because her immune system is already fighting something and I wouldn't want to add to it's load. You'll need to have a serious chat with the vet about it.

I don't know if she will be ok until you get home, but I hope she will be :)

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I am going to take her to the vets this Saturday now instead, but the specialist vet who I was reccomended is not working this Saturday (hence I was waiting for the vet reccomended on here).

Is there anything I can do to help in the mean time? She is an indoor bun and is in the bunny proof bathroom at home today with her cage, lots of hay, water, food, carrot and toys.

Just want to help her, I have been wiping the snot away for her

How is your girl now? Have you had her on much treatment?

I hate to see her suffer. She is an outstandingly special bun and just discovered her hormones as well so I think she is wearing herself out a bit and struggling.

Seeing the snot come out and bubbling is really distressing.

just wanted to say im sorry shes ill at the moment-ive had issues with honey and i know how stressful it is. hope she feels better soon:wave:

Thank you v much xx

It feels strange saying she is "ill" when she seems so fine in herself when the snot isn't bubbling, I hope this means she isn't going to die. I am so scared of coming home and finding her dead. I don't know how I would deal with it

Oh no :(

Are you able to organise to leave work a bit earlier one day this week and take her in in the evening? They are open till 7pm.

I don't have that much experience of snuffly rabbits, but mine was ok whilst waiting over a week for a test, without antibiotics but with Metacam.

The earliest I can take her now will be Saturday when my other half is home to drive us.

I got insurance with Pet Plan on Wednesday but assume it won't cover me just yet.

I can't afford a taxi there and back plus the vet fee. I am giving her metacam and hoping she will be ok as she is fine in herself?

Is the 'snot' thick and white, or clear?

Check with a vet first, but can i make a recommendation, that you take her into your bathroom once you have the shower/bath running so the room fills with steam and that may help clear it.

Otherwise, its stronger Abx as Sky says, and possibly bisolvon on food to help thin the secretions.

It won't cover any conditions she has already had or which start in the first 14 days of insurance.

Personally I still consider it useful because it can cover illnesses or injuries which come up during the rest of their lives, but obviously it is ***** frustrating paying out for insurance and also bigger bills separately for dealing with the sneezing.

My bunny has snuffles, our vet said a long course of antibiotics really is the best hope you have for seeing a long term benefit.
Bisolvon is REALLY good. When we finished the 12 week course of baytril he was still sneezy (but the mucus wasn't nearly as bad as it had been before) and now the only medication he's on is bisolvon (it thins the mucus to help keep the nose clear) and he's sneezed maybe once or twice in the month we've been using it and his nose usually looks clear. He's also much brighter in himself too :)

Thank you once again everyone.

It sounds like some sort of long term meds will be the only solution.

Her snot is thick and white and seems to really bubble when she is sneezing and she desperately tries to clear it with her front paws, bless her little heart.

I suppose what I am worried about more than anything is that it will kill her. Does this happen much with snuffles?

The 2 times we have been to the vets before her chest has been fine and temperature fine.

Does the sneezing appear like so? (this is quite severe, and is a little upsetting to some, so i'm sorry in advance) : click to watch the video :

I can't see that video I am afraid? Will try to post one myself tonight so you all have an idea of how bad she is xxx

:( reminds me of Buckley's sneezing fits. **schnozz rubs for Ginger**

Fayelou, I know this is going to sound like an odd question but does the snot smell funky?
If her chest is clear and her temperature is fine then that's a good sign :) It shows that the infection is probably still localised to her upper respiratory tract.
Get a C&S done, and ask for some bisolvon while you wait for the results of the test, it'll help keep her nose a bit clearer.
Lots of fusses for your bunbun xoxo

I haven't smelt the snot, but I will have a smell of it tonight? Isuppose the smell can't have been obvious to notice? Her hormones have just kicked in so she has been doing lots of normal but smelly poos everywhere and humping my arms for dear life!

Will definitely have a bath tonight with her in the room, maybe it will relax us both a little bit and I will be taking your advice about a c & s test...I just hope the little bit of metacam I have given her last night and this morning is making a difference. Only 4 and a half hours until I am home with her now. She is going to get such a big cuddle tonight!

Oh, poor sneezy Ginger. Get well soon!
Ada was sneezing like that, but sometimes at least for three times as long... sometimes I'd wonder if she would ever stop sneezing.
It's sounding softer and the sneezing fits aren't lasting as long since starting the azithromycin.

Fayelou, I hope the bath helps and that you get some good advice & treatment at the vet.

Just home and watched video...Simba is at LEAST as bad as ginger I am afraid. I have counted 29 sneezes at some times. I am just home so time to get her in the living room and a nice treat after her panacur
