  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Something white in the corner of my rabbit's eye

Young Bun
My rabbit managed to escape from his harness when I let him out for some exercise on Saturday and then he was gone for two nights. I luckily found him in the garden last night, chasing a cat! When I got him back inside, I noticed that on the corner of his right eye, he has a white bit on it. It isn't attached to the eye, almost looks like a layer of skin. Can you tell me what this might be and will it go away? How on earth he got it I don't know. It could be that it was to protect his eye whilst out there in the wild. He is only about 8 months old so only a baby.

He needs to see a vet. It could be something like his third eyelid has gotten caught and is now out of place, or he has a small infection, or it could just be 'sleep' but it's better to be safe than sorry, especially if he has been out and about and rendevous-ing with cats (who have very nasty bacteria in their mouths and under their nails).

I agree with Sky-O, the only way you'll know is to take him to the vet. Better safe than sorry. Make sure you check him over, and get the vet to check him over for any sign of bites or scratches, a small cat scratch can kill a bunny.

You are so, so lucky he came back and wasnt killed, most owners dont get that second chance. I would recommend time in a secure run for exercise from now on, instead of going out for walks, as it can be dangerous.

You'll have to rename him Houdini
