Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Rabbit falling over... update

bradley

New Kit
Some may have seen my thread about Snowy falling over. The vet said this was an ear infection or e.cuniculi or both. The rabbit has slowly got worse and can't stand for more than a few seconds without help now. Here is what the vet as gave him:

First vet visit:
Panacur: 28 day treatment 1 click each day
Canaural: Weeks treatment 3 drops twice a day
Cleanaural: Been using this for about 3 weeks 3 drops twice a day
Baytril: 0.5ml twicxe a day

Next vet visit:
Baytril 0.8ml once a day
Metacam: 0.8ml once a day
Still using cleanaural

The rabbit has got to go back in a around a week and the vet has said there may not be much more we can do for the rabbit. The rabbit always falls to the same side. Ears look clean compared to fist visit but I know the infection could be deeper. The rabbit has about 4 doses of panacur left. Is there anything else I can try?

Has there been much exploratory in the way of testing for ear infection?IF it was an ear infection it should have been cultured to find out what it would respond to and I would expect something other than Baytril to be being used by now..

Or Are there any other signs of EC? (white patches in the eye etc?). If so the panacur and metacam are they way to go - just keep at it.

PS I would NOT give up on bun at this stage. You may need to ask the vet to refer you to a more specialist rabbit vet if they are already suggesting giving up.

PS My bun who has a severe and long standing ear infection was briefly given canaural and not only did it not help it actually made the ear a lot worse

Is your rabbit a specialist rabbit vet? IF not, definitely seek one on here that comes reccomended in your area.

I am sorry you are having a rough time with your bun, I wish you lots of love and vibes and really hope for a good recovery xxxxx

My Headtilt bun was given all you have, but altogether, higher dosage and twice a day, this was given on the first initial vets visit and he said leave the next visit for 2 weeks, because it will get worse and will take that long to take any effect.
I also syringe fed and watered on his worse days.

He got worse for the first week and a half, then slowly started making improvements, He is now the most lively of all my bunnies, although he has a tilt, but that only makes him cuter :)

Can show you pics if you like?

May also help if you put him in a smaller box or a pet carrier and rolls towels/blankets and place them around the side, to help keep bun safe and more stable

Dont give up on the bun :D

Thaks for all the advice! the ear has not been cultured as there isn't actually anything visable in it. The vet is one we have used for a while but I also have avfriend who is a vet who is not in the area advising us and he specialises in rabbits! I am going to keep going with the metacam but will need to get more as he only has 2 more days worth. he has not other sighns of the e.cuniculi. all I think i can do is carry on treating for everything and hope to see an improvement!

Just an update Snowy is still not any better. He is still fine in himself but cannot support himself on his back legs. On Saturday he would have finished his 30 day panacur course. he doesn't seem to bedizzy instead his back legs just cannot support him. His left side is better than his right though!

my rabbit also has e c and cannot get around in her hutch but when she is in the garden she can run around,i emailed a specialist at bristol uni and he said their eyes need to be in line with the horizon so she goes out in the day and back in her hutch at night until she starts to get better

My rabbit still falls over outside he has to be propped up!

well it seems like it will be a put to sleep situation. The rabbit has not improved and is not standing at all without falling over. His back legs seem to just gove way underneath him. The metaca did not do anything and the baytril has not made anything better either. The rabbit is still eating and pooing etc. The rabbit has a slight head tilt but i think this could be due to him keeping it like that when he is lieing down. Is there anything else I could do?

Hi

I am very sorry to hear that Snowy is still ill -

I know that you say you are very happy with your vet but Baytril really is only the tip of the iceburg with ear infections and there are many many other treatments that could be tried if it is an infection. Have you had his ear xrayed and a culture taken, or given that the legs are problematical, have you had spinal area xrayed?

whereabouts are you? someone may be able to suggest a specialist vet.

I do so hope something further can be done for Snowy.

If it is difficult for you to get him to another vet perhaps someone else might take him on?

I am speaking to a specialist rabbit vet who is a friend who is quite far away but he agrees with the treatment being given and thinks there may be scarring on the brain.

Thanks for asking :)

that great . . .specialists in rabbits are a small group of people so you are lucky to have one as a friend . . what extra treatment have they suggested?

Our bun is on a range of different antibiotics for his ear infection and has had CT scans etc to try and determine the extent of the problem and possible damage..

We had another bun with long term EC who also had a full neurological assessment with the specalist vet - has your friend been able to do this for Snowy?
