Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Is Daisy ready for Spaying?

I've had my bun Daisy now for 2 and half weeks, she's coming on leaps and bounds (literally lol!)

I would like to get her spayed, but am unsure whether she is old enough? She is around 15 weeks old and when I took her to the vets 2 weeks ago for her myxi vaccine she weighed 1.62kg and she has continued to grow a little since then.

She is exhibiting hormonal behaviour, digging, pulling on her blanket and grunting occcasionally

I have only ever owned male buns in the past so appreciate that a spay is a much bigger op and will take a while for her to fully recover. Ideally I'd like to get her done before the really cold weather sets in! And then hopefully bond her with my 2 males after Xmas to give her time to heal.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hello

You will *know* when hormonal behaviour sets in! She'll get more aggressive, more naughty, she'll want to mark territory more, start humping & circling and so on. Teenage behaviour! After her spay, you'll need to wait appx 8 weeks before bonding starts, as it takes a while for the hormones to fade out.
My buns both turned into little terrors

Oh, and I might be wrong, but I think a female needs to be about 6 months before being spayed.

Hi Beau Belle

Thanks for your reply :)

I thought I read somewhere on here that they could be as young as 14 weeks for a spay. My vet also mentioned that she could do it in 4 weeks time (that was 2 weeks ago). My usual vet who is very rabbit savvy is currently setting up a new clinic so is not practising where I go, so I wasn't sure she was right or not?

I might be wrong about the age, and the vet would know more than me :)

The vets I work for normally say 6 months and over 1kg in body weight. We have done some from 5ish months, as long as they are over 1kg. The smaller they are the more risky the anaesthetic.

Oh right, thanks. So seeing as she is probably getting on for 1.8kg now, and she is 4 months old she should be ready. Will have a chat with my vet later this week :)
