  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

A very strange spay complication.

Hammy

Young Bun
Pandorawas due to be spayed today. She is only 13 weeks, I have mmy reasons for spaying so young, I have a male and nowhere to keep him seperate. But when we opened her up (I was in theatre with her, I'm a vets nurse) my vets could not find find the uterus and my.vets has done lots of rabbit spays so he is not inexperienced. Anyhow when we did find it it was not connected to the vagina and was undeveloped, which wazoo odd. The vet seems to think she is deformed and.won't be able to have a litter but has advised that she come back, I'm,6 months and try again, he wnts to take out what is there anyway but today she had been under the anaesthetic ages and advised I wait so I did. Has anyone else heard of anything like this?

At 13 weeks, bun is unlikely to be developed enough to be fully spayed. How very confusing that your vet even contemplated it. I'm sure he knows his stuff though.

As far as I was aware the earliest a female could be spayed was 16 weeks. Sounds too early to me.

Yes this happened a few weeks ago to one of the members here. This is the thread.

(It's a long thread, so I'll summarize!) I've seen something similar. When Josie was opened up for her spay, they vet found she had no uterus, ovaries or tescticles. Her insides were also slightly deformed, so we think she just never developed properly. She also has a very swollen vagina that is almost a penis.

Not sure if it's the same as your situation though. 13 weeks does sound very young for a spay. You say you can't keep her separate from the male, but why couldn't the male be neutered? Wouldn't that be less risky?
