Taking Mole to the vets tonight UD Home and nomming!

Tinsel

Wise Old Thumper
He didn't eat this morning until his metacam and zantac kicked in and he doesn't seem to eat grass/hay. The non-rabbit vet clipped his incisors Friday - should he be eating normally by now? I'm not sure he can as his teeth seem to be at a funny angle ie sticking forward. Rabbit-savvy vet is seeing him tonight - any advice/anything specific to ask? :?

I would think molar problems are highly likely. It sounds as though he has an Incisor malocclusion so he may actually do better in the longterm if he had his Incisors removed. Clipping of the teeth can do considerable damage resulting in tooth root abscesses.

Good luck at the Vets xx

Oh poor little Mole, it was so lovely of you to take this little fella & get treatment for the little soul. Sending vibes for the vets appointment.

I was thinking this earlier. The teeth can shatter or break inside and the resulting infection can become an abscess. If the front teeth are not growing straight down I would just get them out as soon as possible if it were me. Having issues with those teeth may mean he has not been able to eat hay and now doesn't realise it's a food, or it could be additional molar root issues. The only way to be sure is an x ray but there isn't much that can be done to 'fix' this. Painkillers and antibiotics can be used when needed. So if you're short on money and have a good vet they should probably be able to guess if this is the problem without the x rays, but if there is a possibility of abscesses you might want to get them done anyway.

Have you tried him on soaked pellets? I haven't been on properly in a few days so I can'r remember if I've asked that already.

I agree he is likely to have molar probs which are causing him pain. again removing his incisors would save problems developing there, he could have them removed while have a molar dental if it turns out her needs one
Hope he soon gets sorted x

Thank you all for the replies.

Mole has been admitted as it looks as if one of his molars is loose and possibly becoming slightly infected so they are going to remove it and neuter him at the same time. They're not very keen on removing incisors because they say they sometimes grow back, and they prefer regular burring - does that sound right though? :?

My Herbie's Incisors grew back after removal, well one big massive top one and some peg teeth did. Then i got the op done again and his peg teeth grew back. I often have to get his peg teeth burred, but he is fine with it, and more often than not they just seem to fall out themselves now.

I have heard of many bunnies that get their Incisors removed with no re growth tho'

I hope wee Mole gets on well with his op x

Good luck for Mole today, hope all goes well.

Louise and Gus' vet (William Lewis, who is an exotics specialist) also prefers regular burring to incisor removal - he says that it's actually a hugely big operation and if it can be managed with regular burring, that is far preferable. Louise's Gus has been having his incisors burred for the past couple of years. Her vet also says that without the incisors, it makes it much more difficult to do a regular dental, because the mouth gag hooks around the incisors - so if it's possible that Mole may have other mouth problems, keeping the incisors if possible may be the best option, for the moment at least.

Good luck for the little chap xx

the incisors only grow back if the vet removing them doesn't remove/damage the tooth roots properly
Some vets use mouth gags for burring molars so yes they would then find it impossible..however some use cheek spreaders which aren't affected by the incisors
to me the decision would be how bad the incisors are, some after a few burrs may straighten enough to meet and wear down..some won't and may gradually get worse and worse meaning 2-weekly burrs. In the worst cases removal, in my opinion, is the better option

I hope moles operation goes well. Poor boy, he's already been through enough. I hope he recovers quickly so that your left in peace with him for a while!

He's awake and ready to come home! :D Not sure what they've done exactly but he's been neutered and had some dental work. Will update again when I know more. Thank you for all the vibes and good wishes
