Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Ear Wax - what is normal etc

Young Bun
Hey everyone

Our bun had a nasty op done a few weeks back, having his ear canal removed due to a large abscess. He seems to be on the mend so fingers crossed!

It has made me very vigilant about his other ear, and although with the aid of a flashlight I can see a little wax, what is normal and should be left and what is not? I was at the vets this morning and forgot to ask! I don't want to start poking around down there if I don't need to. He's a lop bunny by the way.

Also, after an operation, is it normal for some fluid to develop around the site of the op? A small squishy lump has appeared at the back of his ear which we are treating with injected penicillin (up'd the dosage from his regular post-op care) as a precaution hoping it is just fluid build up. The lump is certainly squishy whereas his abscess was a solid lump so hoping it is not a reoccurrence.

All help welcome :)

Without being able to see the ear canal it is totally impossible to say if the amount of wax in it is normal or not. So maybe it'd be a good idea to get the Vet to check on it. I would avoid poking anything into the ear as that can actually do more harm than good.

As to the lump near the surgical site, it could be a build up of fluid, especially if it is near where any sutures were/are. But unfortunately it is possible that it is another abscess. Did the Vet attempt to aspirate the lump to see what it contains ?

The wax is just a small amount deep down in the ear, will get vet to check next week when I'm in again with him.

The lump is behind where some stitches were (stitches on inside of ear) so perhaps that's just where the fluid has pooled being the nearest stretchy site? The vet didn't lance it, not what they do normally apparently as if it is an abscess that can make it worse.
