  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Another question about Poo - Sorry :D

Misty's Mummy

Warren Scout
Misty is now on pellets all the time. She does still get a teeny wee bit of muesli (as in a pinch), just because its still a full bag left and i dont really want to waste it. She does eat all her pellets and once her bag of muslie is done thats it.

I have noticed since she's been on the pellets her poos are more black than brown. Is this something to do with having more fibre?

Poos tend to change color depending on what they eat, so unless you notice a change in size or quantity, I wouldn't worry at all, its perfectly normal. :)

Their colour does change depending on their food. It winter when my guys mainly have hay as their staple diet, their poos are a golden brown. But in summer, when they are eating lots of grass, they are normally black. As long as there are plenty of them and they are of a similar size, I wouldn't worry too much. Just make sure they are eating lots of hay and not too many pellets.

In all honesty and please do not feel I am having a go, I would discontinue the musli all together there is no benefit whatso ever in continuing it and she is better off without it, you could always donate the rest of the bag to a charity or pets at home.
Also as others have said ensure she is on a very small amount of pellets (an egg cup full max) and eating as much hay/grass as possible.

In regards to your question, again as others have said, poo colour tends to vary in regards to diet, a diet of mostly grass and pellets will produce darker poops were as a diet made up of mostly hay and a few pellets will produce golden poops. So as long as the quantity and size do not vary, no need to worry.

She gets about 2 eggcup fulls per day. I double checked this before giving her it, i was worried she would lose wieght, as she's quite a thin bunny.

I'll stop giving her museli. :D and She does eat her hay.

Thank you for your reply
