Mufasa was born in July 2006, and joined our family in September that year. I remember picking him, the first cuddle, and holding him in one hand as he sat on my chest. He had a beautiful little brown nose amongst his fluff of strawberry blonde fur. On his first night he snuggled up to Dad’s smelly garden shoe, maybe it was the smell of grass, maybe he just liked cheesy feet – we’ll never know.
We’ve never had a house rabbit, or really a house pet before, beyond the hamsters and the fish. Moofy was our first roaming pet, well; he was a member of our family, not just a pet.
The past 5 years have been wonderful, and although he destroyed many walls, cabinets, wires, jumpers, jeans, munched chairs and tables, and he broke many lamps by head butting them off the ledge, he was a pleasure to have in our kitchen.
Goodness knows how you didn’t electrocute yourself on those wires, especially the main cables in Dad’s office – your favourite place to spray. Who is going to run up the stairs and hide under Tom’s bed now? Perhaps I’ll try but I don’t think I’ll fit.
Eating at the dinner table won’t be the same without you head butting our feet (sensing cheesy feet pattern), nor will making breakfast in the morning as you scratch nibble at my PJ bottoms or jeans. Who on earth are we going to trip over now whilst we try to cook?
And I’ll never forget the face you pulled when you stole a salt and vinegar crisp off me. You were so delighted with yourself that you flopped onto your side and pulled a toothy grin at me whilst licking your lips. You little monkey you did rather like crisps didn’t you; twiglets were a yes but carrots were a no, you strange little bunny. How about the time you sprayed Tom in the face? Hahaha. Oh Moofy.
I tried everything I could to save him, but in the end it was time to learn how to not be selfish, and to let go.
We all love you so much, nose rubs and head butts, just the way you like them
