  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help with putting on weight

Hi there. I have a female lionhead Jess who recently lost her bonded sister Tinkerbell:cry:. She's doing ok though, eating, drinking, pooing and running around the garden as normal:) she's never been a big rabbit, just under 2kgs, but I'm just slightly concerned that she maybe losing weight. If the rescue centre where I got her from was correct with her age she could be almost 9. She's fed on hay, veggies, free range of her very own grassed garden(spoilt I know!) and super burgess excel. I'm just wondering if I would be better changing her nugget feed to something specific for the older rabbit. Thanks for any advice.:D

PS hope it's ok to post this extra bit, but i'm waiting to be homechecked as I'm hopefully going to give a home to Cedric the cashmere lop at Rugby rabbit/guinea pig rescue. I'm out of Tracy's area and I know she's posted on the Home Check area of this forum, but just in case anyone has missed it and could help!!

It's a common problem with oldies. I give my two oldies a teaspoon of dry porridge oats per day to help them maintain their weight. Try not to feed anything sugary because although it will help with weight gain, it will interfere with their gut flora and possibly cause problems.

Thank you for that. I will try and see if she likes porridge oats! Do you just sprinkle them on food or give separately? She doesn't get much that's sugary. A little carrot as a treat now and again, or a bit of apple. Other than that it's greens, herbs, grass, hay and nuggets.
