Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

help my bunny just had babies!

hi, my rabbit (allegedly a boy!) has just had babies! i can see 2 moving around but there not in a nesting box or anythin and im scared mum tramples on them?
any help gratefully appreciated!
karen

Has mum made a nest? Out of hay and her fur?

Is the male still in there? if so, get him out quickly. Rabbits can get pregnant in an hour after giving birth.

Rub your hands all over mum so you smell of her, and just peek at the babies - they should have tummies like little ping pong balls - all round - that shows they are eating. If they are, leave mum to it - just keep checking.

Make sure mum has plenty of hay as she'll need lots too eat.

Firstly, if there are any other rabbits with her, remove them straight away, they could injure the babies and get the female pregnant again almost instantly

They should be in a nest of hay\straw and fur (or just fur if you hadn't given her any hay/straw), a nest box is not needed, they're only really needed in other countries if the rabbits are kept on wire bottom cages

Don't stress the female out, give her as much peace and quiet as you can, if you check the babies then rub your hands in her bedding and on her first. You will want to up her feed and give her a range of leaves/herbs/veg. Give her extra hay/straw if she doesn't have a lot already. Don't try take pictures with a camera flash. And don't worry if the mother appears to be ignoring the rabbits, they don't tend to pay much attention apart from when she's feeding. Be very careful when opening the hutch door, babies tend to dive/fall out when you're least expecting it.
