Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

When to take for myxi jab?

 I recently rescued a new bunny, Daisy. She is around 12 weeks old and seems to be settling in quite well. I haven't had her out of her hutch yet (I only bought her home on Sat afternoon.)

But I was wondering, would it be too stressful to take her to the vets for her first myxi jab and general health check tonight, or will this cause undue stress for her?

I am keen to have her vaccinated as she came from poor living conditions where there were several other buns that hadn't been vaccinated either.

Thanks in advance

Dani

Hi there!
I would take her as soon as possible. There is a myxi outbreak where I am in Suffolk and I had my buns vaccinated, but unfortunately they still got myxi and one died. The other is still going, doesnt seem to have it so bad. The one who died, must have been infected with myxi shortly after she was vaccinated (it takes two weeks for them to build up their immunity) and did not have enough immunity to fight it off. Myxi is prevalent in Autumn, so get it done sooner rather than later. Its not too traumatic for them. Its done in seconds. You can get them vaccinated from 6 weeks. :D

Hi Dani,

I think having a vet check and myxo jab ASAP would be smart (although I tend to do things like that in the mornings when it's colder so they don't get stressed and then also get very cold). Yes, the whole procedure will be stressful for her (the journey, the vets, etc), so try to minimise stress as much as possible (cool car, carrier held securely in place-i.e. not on a lap) and get her favourite noms ready for when she comes back to tempt her.

Good luck :)

lol I'll be fine with the vet trip (I've made many in the past) - and certainly won't drive with the carrier on my lap ;)

6pm tonight will be a similar temp to 9am this morning I think, so wouldn't make much of a difference.

I was going to let her have a hop about in her pen for a while afterwards in the conservatory and try and bond a little with her - I may even be able to get a photo to post! :D

 This is always reassuring.

When I look at temperatures, I'm not looking at the temperature that it is at that time, but the temperature it will be in the following hours when the rabbit will start to feel the effects of the vaccination and have to deal with calming down from the stress of it. That's all :) I'd suggest giving her a heat source overnight tonight so that if she feels chilly and feels the effects of the experience then she has somewhere to go to get warmer :)

Been to the vets and managed to bond a little with Daisy when I got back! :D

The vet was very pleased with her overall health and said Daisy should be ready for spaying in about 6 weeks time. Daisy weighs 1.58kg, so I am assuming this estimate is right?

Perhaps I should start another thread?
