Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

lion lop lost his mane!

My lion lop Simba seems to have lost most of his mane :( I'm not sure whether he's been rubbing his head or over grooming himself but he now has tufts of fluff where his flowing hair used to be and I wondered whether this was normal?

This is very normal.

It's very common for a single mane lionhead (which is often what lionlops are) to lose their mane. It depends on genetics. Sometimes, moults later, it can grow back sometimes thicker or different.

This can also appear to happen when they start to moult because the mane often comes out first, but takes ages to regrow.

Either way, it's perfectly normal. If you're seeing any parasites on the fur or any inflammed/dandruffy skin or any itching from him then it's worth a vet check.

oh phew thanks guys! puts my mind at rest, his skin is fine, can't see anything so its all good :) Bless him, he looks so cute without it but i feel its wrong for him not to have it :)

You never know what just might happen. My lionlop randomly grew a beard recently! She never had one before

If you have another rabbit that lives with him then it could be that they are giving the lionhead a hair cut.

Our lion head seems to get a visit by a rabbit barber as one of our lops chews the lionhead's mane down lol

Manes change all the time, they can depend on moult, sometimes they just think or dissapear. Apparently females usually keep their manes better than males
