  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Underweight rabbit?

Izzy feels a lot lighter than Archie. She is the same age as him (1 year old) and she is a dwarf lop x lionhead (I think Archie is a dwarf lop) I held Archie today and he felt heavier than normal, and when I stroked him I couldn't really feel his spine, and I couldn't feel his ribs. I held Izzy and she was a lot lighter than him, and I could feel her ribs and spine quite easily. They have a bowl each, so I put the food in the bowls and leave them to eat, but I think Archie's been eating all of his food and then going to eat Izzy's, because I think she does eat more slowly than him. Should I be able to feel the spine or ribs on them at all? I seperated them to eat tonight, is that right? Should I be giving Izzy any more food or Archie any less? They get 40g each of burgess excel, which always seemed to be fine for Archie and Molly, but I think because Izzy takes longer to eat she's not getting as much and Archie's getting more food.
