Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Impaction

myrabbitbenji

Young Bun
My rabbit has been admitted this evening for suspected impaction. I am very worried and I am just wondering what the prognosis is likely to be.

Thanks for any advice

Really sorry to hear about your poor bunny  Is there any news from the vet? Admission is definitely the best thing for him. It does depend on where the impaction is as to how good the prognosis is, but even badly impacted buns make miraculous recoveries. It is impossible to say but it is a very serious condition. However, with good vet care and lots of vibes he stands a chance of recovery of course he does. Fingers crossed and sending you a big hug, you must be very worried about him x

I am sorry about your bunny. He is in the best hands. A bunny can get over impaction with the help of good nursing and vet treatment. The prognosis could be anything from him giving up to him making a full recovery in a few days. It totally depends on the vet, the care and how the bun handles it.

I dearly hope he gets through this ok. x

Very sorry to hear that your bunny is poorly but he's in the best possible place with the vet. Is there any news of his condition overnight?

Admission is the best thing for your bunny as they should have him on fluids.

I have had a bunny who had an impation a few years ago and she fully recovered, we nearly had to authorise surgery (which is risky) but on the day it got to that things started to move.

Sending your bunny lots of vibes and hope things start to move on their own.

Thank you for all the replies

Sorry I haven't updated this earlier. I picked Benji up last night from the vets again. They had given him fluids, pain relief, gut stimulants and I think pineapple juice overnight and throughout the next day. I have the breakdown of exactly what he had. The vet I saw when I picked him up said it wasn't actually a impaction (she had palpated him) and she couldn't feel anything although the vet who admitted him the evening before thought she could. She basically said it was a case of gastric stasis although not sure of the cause of it. She checked him for dental issues and didn't feel there was anything significant problems which could have led to this. Perhaps it was the change of temperature (i don't know this I am just guessing)

Anyway he is home and has eaten and poo'd as well so am hoping he will be ok

He isn't 100% right as for some reason he is still off spring greens but he has eaten some raspberry leaves, spinach, hay, dandelions, and a small offering of pellets I gave him - and he has had access to grass all day in his run too
