  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Is this normal? - Missing fur!

This evening I was stroking Jimby on the head when I noticed he was loosing tufts of fur on his head, I sat there de tufting him and did not pull out anything that was not 'ready' to come out they were all loose.
But he looks like he is going bald!
I have tried to look at the skin underneath but the fur is too tight and short if that makes any sense.
Here are some pictures and a video, I would really appriciate your opinions...

I apologise if the video makes you dizzy!!

Don't worry. It's just his lovely new fur coming in underneath. He's not going to end up naked or anything.

It's the time of year. Everything with fur is looking a bit tatty.

Are you all sure? Do I need to call the vet tomorrow? :(
It just feels like the 'new fur' is so deep! If that makes any sense?!

If it's a moult, it's a moult, we can't say any more than that.

If there was a problem you wouldn't be seeing his new fur, which is what the short, coloured bit is. You would be seeing skin and it would be likely inflammed, or flakey or something.

Only if you want to stress him out taking him on a needless journey. You should see the state of Frank. He has a skirt of tatty hair hanging off him that I pluck at when he's eating his pellets. His head fur has grown through now, but he was exactly like Jimby down his forehead last month.

Relax, bunny mummy. You're doing a good job picking up on things so quickly, but in this case you have nothing to worry about.

Scamp has a Nike tick in the same place at the moment  The new fur is sort of like velvet.. really short but really dense. It grows really quick though, in a couple of days it will seem more like normal fur. No need for a vet trip :)
