  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Getting Poppy Spayed

What is the earliest we can get a baby bun spayed some rabbit wesbites say 14 weeks but these forums tend to say 6 months? does it depend on the individual rabbit and can the vet determine an age on when she is ready?

My vet wont spay females until they are 5 months, this reduces the risk of complications including withstanding the anaesthetic.

A few people i have spoken to also say about 5-6 months is right for spaying a female.

Mine won't spay until at least 5 months, preferably 6 and when they are over 1kg (unless dwarf breed).

The younger and smaller they are then the more difficult the surgery as the uterus and tubes tend to be really small and tear easily, so the anaesthetic can be longer then it would be in a larger rabbit.

Wach vet could be different though, personally I wouldn't want to do it younger than 5 months as I have seen how much more difficult the smaller ops are.

For a female most vets wont spay until theyre 5-6 months old and a good size, as the operation is huge for a doe. To be honest I would be wary of a vet that will spay earlier than that

I think it depends on the bunny and the vet. My rabbit started to mature fairly early and so I spoke to my vet and she was happy to do it fairly early. I think every situation is different and you should talk to your vet.
