  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Should I be giving a probiotic as well?

Hi Dylan was prescribed baytril and an antibiotic eye gel for a possible eye infection on Monday (from a not at all rabbit savvy vet, going to a much better vets tomorrow morning for myxi and a check up). From reading some posts and searching I noticed that others give probiotics when they are giving abx. He doesn't seem to be suffering any ill effects, but there were a couple of excess cecals yesterday and antibiotics are the only thing thats changed.

Also when do others give probiotics? Is it a good idea to give them some every few weeks to maintain the flora in the gut or just at periods of stress or change?

Sorry if this is a silly question newbie rabbit owner! :D

I personally give them to my lops whenever they have abx because they both have slightly iffy tummies anyway and abx usually tips it over the edge. The other two, if they have to have abx I wait and see how they get on and if I see excess cecals I give them some. I use the pro fibre pellets. :)
