  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Yesterday we took our bun to the vets for his myxi and a check up. We took him to the supposed best vets in the area. I thought he had a blocked tear duct or infection as I'd noticed a little matted patch under his eye. She wasn't a rabbit savvy vet. She even thought he was a dwarf rabbit because of his sizenot realising he's a baby. I had to point out his age. She looked at his teeth with not the right tool she said as they couldn't find it. Then they had no vaccination to do the jab so she tried to do vhd but with cylap I stood my ground and said I've read bad things about that one. She wasn't happy about this. I wouldn't let him have it.

We then came away with some antibiotic eye gel and oral liquid. She didn't show us how to try and syringe the medicine so that was a stress. Any tips on this? We're going back Thursday for his myxi but I'm so disappointed with these recommended vets. They even talked about a putting him under to file down a tooth that might be a little long but she wasn't even sure. Should I take him elsewhere and cancel this appointment? Also is a tear duct always caused by teeth as she didn't give any other reason for the infection.

Thanks all he was just beginning to really come out of his shell too. Binkying like crazy every day and coming up to our knees and climbing on us, now he's just sat on his box behind the sofa looking unhappy. Sorry for the rant just want the best for him. X

Go to a different vet :) Call and ask of they use lapinject (although lots do still use cylap) and ask a few general questions about the practice.

If you post what town/area you're in, people may be able to recommend better vet. :D Edit original thread heading to reflect change in content?

I've done a quick search through old posts and someone has recommended crofts vets its fairly new in the village next to where I live so might give them a ring they're meant to have rabbit specialists in practices. Sounds a lot better. His eye.s looking a little better now. Dreading trying to get the abx in him. He's on 0.8mls which seems like loads trying to get him to take it!
