Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Extreme fur loss :(

We adopted Wyn last February and the first thing we did was get him neutered and get his teeth checked (his eyes were watery) and they did find a few spurs. He's been very well since then, put on loads of weight and has always been a big, strapping healthy lad.

A few weeks back he very suddenly stopped eating and started doing tiny poops so a recurrence of his dental issues was my first thought. Sure enough his teeth were overgrown again and had cut his cheeks and tongue :( He came home after the dental but didn't pick up so he went back to the vets where they found his tongue had become infected :( Anyway, lots of treatment, syringe feeding etc etc later and he has been doing much better, eating well again, starting to put on weight etc. He has been separate from Maggie during this time so we could monitor his eating, not something I'd usually do but he really was critical for a while.

And then, last week, I noticed some clumps of fur in his area. I thought, at first that Maggie had pulled them out - they can snuffle through the bars and he had been sitting up next to the bars to be close to her. But when I picked him up to weigh him he felt scabby and I found bald patches developing. We saw the vet the following day and he thought it was bacterial and gave him a long acting antibiotic.

We went back to the vets a couple of days later and saw one of the rabbit specialists. She took some skin scrapes and samples and checked him for mites which appeared to be clear but we have treated him with xenex just in case. He's also still on the antibiotics and we're waiting for the results of a ringworm test.

Wyn is still quite bright in himself and still eating well although he's now struggling to maintain his weight. But he looks AWFUL, honestly just looking at him makes me cry. When I did his jab last night a massive clump of fur came away in my hand so now he has a big bald patch on his back, bald patches and cuts on his tummy and the rest of him looks really scruffy. The skin itself looks ok to me, apart from the odd place where there is a scratch or cut.

Anyway, the next step if the ringworm is negative, is a biopsy and bloods which means a sedation. I just wondered if anyone had seen anything similar, had any ideas what it might be etc? Poor Wyn has been through so much recently and it's breaking my heart to see him looking like this :(

My first thought was mites but as that has come back negative, I could be VERY wrong but could it be stress induced alopecia?
Maybe the stress of being seperated from Maggie?

I did wonder the same :( He is sort of with her though. It's hard to explain so I'll post a pic. This is their usual living area

The area under the C&C cage on the right side is their usual "bedroom". They're not shut in there often, just when other animals are free ranging really. Wyn is currently living in there and Mags has the rest of the room. He clearly does miss being with her as he tries to touch noses through the bars but she is being a cow and has forgotten him and, the one time I did let them meet since he came home, she went for him :( So I'm sure he is stressed between everything he has been through and not having her to snuggle with but I'm not sure if things are different enough to cause this? I guess the only way to be sure is to rule out everything else and then, if there's no obvious physical cause, reintroduce them.

I should add, Mags is fine. If it were anything contagious then they have enough contact, and there's enough of his fur drifting round the room like tumbleweed, that she could easily have picked it up. I'm pretty convinced it's linked to his recent illness somehow either through stress or his system just being so compromised :(

Do you mean Wyn is living in the c&c cage and Mags has the rest of the room or Wyn is shut in in the bedroom area?

Wyn is shut in the bedroom area. The guineas live in the above part of the C&C. So Wyn and Mags are on the same level.

There are bunnies with horrendous moults currently??

Just a thought,it could be stress as they are now apart. As he has been given a clean bill of health, why not pop them back together again?? It maybe stress being apart....otr like i said,a shocking moult. My BB has got bald spots, but the skin is clear and fresh and clean.Growing back as we speak.xx

Thanks Yvette, we're not at clean bill of health stage yet, we still need the ringworm results and then possibly further tests. And I'm still concerned about his eating so I need to monitor that. I'm conscious too that I'm going to have to start again with bonding judging by Maggie's reaction to him and that in itself is going to be pretty stressful for him so I don't want to put him through anything big until we're sure he can cope with it really :(

Ahh sorry, I thought the whole cage was the buns. Do they both have seperate time out in the rest of the room?

Yes, Yvette could be right, my two are mouting awfuly at the moment, tbh I am suprised they still have fur, the rate they are loosing it!

Yes, they have separate out times cos she'll attack him if she can :(

It's definitely more than a moult. He has big bald patches and cuts.

Sorry to hear about poor Wyn. :( Fungal maybe? The samples the vet took should pick that up, at least

He has cuts too? Hmm, that is a tricky one, your right does sound like more than a moult.
I dont know hun, but like Sarah has said hopefully the vet will be able to get to the bottom of it!
