Rabbit bites

Tinsel

Wise Old Thumper
Was reading old threads and started wondering - how many days of antibiotics are needed for a bite not to turn into an abscess? Do antibiotics stay in the system as they do for humans? Pondering... :?

Bunny being bitten by a bunny do you mean?

I would imagine it depends on the situation for how long, and also the antibiotic for how long it stays in the system.

Given that Baytril is the least effective antibio, but I have had that for a rabbit wound on another rabbit, we did a 7 day course. Once you start it, you have to finish it, like with people, even if everything looks good.

Yes, I was thinking of bunny bites. I remember reading that cat bites are more toxic/likely to become infected than rabbits. I guess vets would make a decision looking at the size of the bite etc., but it's interesting to know how long the bite remains "dangerous" for.

Also, what constitutes finishing a course of antibiotics in medical terms ie how do they work it out when they prescribe? Is it to do with the life cycle of the bacteria that's being targeted, for instance? I remember an ex-doctor telling me once that if people knew what antibiotics did to the body they'd never take them - scary! :?

Sorry for all the musings - blame a rainy morning.
