1 myxi jab per year?

Georgeypudding

Why do some vets only reccomend the one?
Do we really need to be doing it 6monthly if we are in a low risk area?
How long does the vaccine last?

By my understanding, the vaccination begins to wear off at 7-8+ months. In 'low risk' areas, obviously this may not be necessary to update/booster, but in my opinion, in ANY area, the cost of a vaccination is little in comparison to the life of a bun.

As I understand it, the vaccination is effective for six months. The previous recommendation in some areas was more about the time of year that rabbits are at risk, ie that you would vaccinate in the spring. Therefore it is much safer to vaccinate every 6 months.

My vet used to recommend only vaccinating for myxi once a year. The new rabbit vet recommends twice a year, and got them to switch to the new VHD jab. :)

Is it just the non rabbit vets recommending once a year?

I've just been researching into this, given I've just seen Nobivac given wrongly.

The fact sheet says 'Duration of immunity: The duration of immunity was established as 6 months.'

http://www.msd-animal-health.co.uk/Products_Public/Nobivac_Myxo/090_Product_Datasheet.aspx

It also says

'In the present state of knowledge no firm recommendation for revaccination frequency can be made but it is suggested that animals should be revaccinated annually in May/June just prior to the myxomatosis season as most myxomatosis in Britain occurs in late summer, autumn and early winter months. Where there is high risk of myxomatosis infection revaccination every six months is suggested.'

My vets say once a year is fine with house rabbits, if you're in a low risk area and they've vaccinated at the right time of year.
Mine are due in Sepetember but dunno if that's a high risk time. I'll be getting them done again anyway

I do twice a year and VHD is once.
For me, there is no other way.
And even if I was Town only,Id still do twice a year.

see sky this is why we love you cos you take out all the hard work of looking...your awesome (as my daughter would say):love::love::love::love:

we just do it once a year before summer because in winter the vet says its not needed unless u bun lives very close to wild rabbits

The non rabbit savvy vet I had when Beano had her first myxi jab said she only needs it done once a year (he was only stepping in for the vets) but I rang up anyway 6 months later and I saw him at the practice and he kept saying I shouldn't have it done 6 monthly but my proper vet knows I should and so do I so I always will!

An extra £70 to get them done twice a year to me is totally worth it. Tiny price to pay IMO. Especially when the vet gives them a thorough health check at the same time.

Yes I also like going ofr the checkup, it's also a chance if either of them need their claws cutting because I can't do it on my own and with Beano it's a four man job with gloves!

Thanks Sky-O I only ask as the deal my vets do only includes one myxi and one vhd jab

I dont mind paying the extra for 2 ofcourse, but I was just wondering why opinions differ

The vet that vaccinated Sox last said he wouldn't nead it again for another 12 months, when we went back for his VHD 2 weeks later the rabbity vet said that's nonsense. And even if it was a low risk area I would still vaccinate twice, small price to pay when it could be potentialy saving bunnies life :)

Same here. When mine were last done in January, she suggested I get them done again in six months (they're booked in next week) but then wait until around March and then get them done yearly around then. And this is a specialist vet at the RVC.

I used to be 12 monthly but then we moved to a house where there were wild rabbits in a field behind us so its 6 monthly now. Although they've now built houses on that field, and the wild buns have moved, I don't think they'll have gone very far, so I still get it done 6 monthly. It's a peace of mind thing really. I count myself lucky never to have seen a bun with myxi.

I want to know why some vets recommend twice a year when the manufacturors recommend once? It's actually on the bottle. :?

I only give it once, I don't think my vet actually will give it twice, and nor will the next two vets away from here. I could probably get it if I demanded it though.

The link I posted is the manufacturers info sheet and they mention both yearly and six monthly.

My vet said that currently it's only licensed to be used yearly but many vets do differently- but then so many drugs in rabbits are used 'off license' it's no different from many other things in that respect.

Because it is only effective for six months, as discussed earlier. So, it's all about the application of it - you either pick your most risky six months, or vaccinate twice a year.
