Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

hi there i have a 5 and a half year old called baby... long story short took him to the vets yesterday after noticing he has a lump near his cheek, hes not in any pain with it and is eating and drinking etc... vet said its an abscess and that its caused from a back tooth growing into it... she said she could give him and xray and see if they can pull the tooth, but the chances of him coming out of the surgery are slim as he is "old"... she said perhaps i should put him to sleep  she gave him some meds for me to give him over this weekend and a pain injection and come back tomorrow with what i want to do.... i want to give him a chance though he is otherwize a healthy strong rabbit and i am confident he can make it through .. any advice??? thanks :)

Five's not really that old, maybe you should consider changing vets to a place that's more experienced with rabbits

Plenty of rabbits get neutered/spayed at 5 years old and are fine with it :)

I hope it works out!

thats what i thought! i was really distraught with the thought of writing him off without at least trying. i hope it works out i really do.:p

I really wouldn't have been happy with that suggestion. Sounds as though you need a more rabbit-savvy vet. I wouldn't consider a rabbit to be old at 5, either.

PS Do you use this vet for regular teeth checks?

I had an eight year old rabbit having regular sedation for teeth problems. As long as he is healthy I wouldn't expect it to be a problem. As others have said you probably need to find an experienced rabbit vet.

If you say where you are then someone on here will probably be able to recommend a good rabbit vet.

i live in cwmbran in south wales.. i have used this vet for all my animals all thankfully have never really needed an op except to be castrated. he is healthy apart from this he was there about 2 years ago as he got chased by a stray cat in my garden and he knocked out his front tooth.. other than that his teeth have been fine... watching him hop around the garden and touching noses with his best friend tikka (my cat :)) is spurring me on and i will demand he gets the best outcome tommorow

thanks guys for replying it has been so very hard hearing u may have to put one of your loved ones to sleep... x

I am sure there is some advice on here regarding sedating rabbits, they don't usually fully anesthetise. If you search anesthetic or dental you should find something. I hope all goes well for you tomorrow.

what a great link!! 15 oh my... baby is actually living up to his name in comparison!!!

the vets will do all they can on him wont they even if the case maybe they are not rabbit savvy as others?

I'd be much more worried about the vets skill than the rabbits age, they don't sound too confident in themselves!

as iv said on the PM keep strong, maybe ask on here about other savvy vets in your area just so you have a "idea". I think the main thing is you feel confident with you vet. I have full confidance in mine and knew my two were in the best hands. Ill be thinking of you both tomorrow, keep us updated xxx

I would look for an exotic vet if you can or ring a few within travelling distance and find out if they have anyone who specialises in rabbits.

You would need an x ray to see what's going on and then if it is a abscess the best thing is usually to remove it with surgery. Rabbit abscesses are very different to abscesses in humans and dogs etc. They are sort of like a tumor and have a wall around them so they're quite difficult to treat with antibiotics especially 'weaker' antibiotics like baytril which is what vets usually give to rabbits. Once it's cleaned out you can start a course of injectable antibiotics like depocillin which are much stronger but MUST be given by injection as they can be lethal if given orally. And that combination should hopefully work. After the operation (and earlier if you notice he stops eating) you'll want painkillers.

That's the sort of thing you'd want a vet to advise. Obviously I'm not a vet, but this was the procedure I went through with my rabbit so it gives you an idea of what to expect.

there are a number of vets that practice at that surgery and each has their own specialised field... there is a vet there who is exotics ..and also a nurse who is trained in all things bunny :) so im happy that he will be given the best care.... only the xray can determine if he needs the tooth out or not... but baby and i will cross that bridge when we get to it tomorrow, for now he is munching apple and is blissfully unaware about what may or may not lie ahead.

good luck my baby xxxx:love:

i am sooooooo happy!!!!!!!!

my gorge baby has done it!!!! he had surgery to remove 2 back teeth and his small grape sized abscess has been lanced and packed with gel.... im picking him very soon!!!!!!! :D need to get him over the recovery etc but i am so happy that he proved me right and he made it

well done my baby boy xxxxxx:love:

Awesome news!

Is it antibiotic gel it's been packed with? That was something I looked into before but it seemed not many vets would do it.

He came home very sleepy and wrapped like a baby so i led with him quietly chatting to him... he is now walking around and has munched through 2 strawberrys and has taken some liquid food and drinking too!!! he is so brave! his little face looks a sorry sight on the one side :( .
