ants nests in the lawn

Cutting the grass just now i noticed 3 or 4 ant nests in the lawn, with larvae on them... i've dug some out and squashed them, but 2 questions:

1) are they harmful to rabbits?
2) can i get rid of them for good without harming the rabbits?

At the moment the majority of the lawn is not accessible to the rabbits as they are in their run still, but i am planning on giving them the whole garden soon.... would like to be sure about these pesky ants first!

Red ants can bite, I use boiling water on the nest after digging it up a bit. The resident robin watches with interest and then dives in for a cooked meal! FYI it may kill the lawn a little, but nothing that a bit of grass seed won't fix!

I'd leave them be - they won't do any harm (if they're just the black ants). Red ants can be a little more feisty but they're unlikely to hurt the bunnies.
