Darcy has had his GA. They burred his back teeth and took Xrays of his back and legs. Turns out he his Spondylosis of vertebrae. I knew he was hopping not right. So its going to be continued metacam. I have only spoken to the out of hours person (they have kept him in overnight as did surgery quite late as so busy). So I hopefully will get more information tomorrow.

Does anyone have any experience of this? :(

Thanks Yvette. Darcy is 7 years old this year so I guess its down to old age. He is free range house bunny so everything is really his level. I noticed him not hopping right a few months ago but my normal vet just told me to keep an eye on him and leave it. So I had already got him a flat entry litter tray so he can just walk in and pet stairs if he wants to come on the sofa. At least now I know for sure what is wrong with him (and not me just being over fussing) I can keep him pain free and find out what else there is I can do for him.

Other than painfree, and ensuring he doesnt get overweight, and hes clean.
I find with Lily she cant bend to her bottom sometimes and poop gets stuck? She has teeth issues too, so she cant afford to get dirty and getting fly strike.I think thats the main issues covered. Her weight makes her wobble and topple over so 700grams is her max.Shes only little!!
Another member on here rolls up towels for her bun to lay over?? Like a therapy I guess...a chance to get comfy.
Hope your bun continues to take advantage of your care!!xxxx

Darcy is still okay cleaning his botty himself. He does have problems scratching his ears. Although with metacam it does seem to be easier for him.

Sounds like youve mastered the art!!!
Lily is funny...she washes her face with one paw, then swops. She cant do both paws...
Had the problem since birth.
They both cope extremely well.

Darcy is home  He has eaten but is just sleeping. He seems okay.

I am very confused and really need some RU advice regarding the treatment. Basically they told me that Darcy has Spondilosis of the vertebrae which will cause him some pain. They say its due to his old age (7). When I asked for metacam to take home they NO! I insisted they double check with the vet and again it came back as NO. He has some metacam left from our last visit which I can continue to give him but once that runs out I'm to leave without for a week  They believe that rabbits can't have metacam long term and even if he is in pain can only have it for 10 days on 7 days off.
Is this true? :?

Also is there anything else I can give him like herbs good for joints etc?

I really appreciate you help.

Hi

1. spondylosis is very painful - depending on how far advanced it is - so he will need pain meds.

2. many many many rabbits are on long term metacam for pain - its a question of giving the minimum they need for pain relief - but there is no need at all to take them on/off it - in fact the way that metacam works means that this will mean that the pain cover is insufficient for more than the 7 days off.

3. 7years is not actually that old (think 55-60 in a human) if the bun is a 'normal' size/shape etc.

4. personally I would get a 2nd opinion from a more rabbit savvy vets

(sorry about the numbered points - I am in pain right now myself from a slipped disc so can only function in that way!!!)

Isn't Darcy a big old boofer of a Frenchie? Hope I've got the right Darcy .

Brody bun had arthritis of the spine and was on permanent Metacam as a result. The rationale was that there was no point keeping her alive in pain so the Metacam was a necessary evil (sort of). Because of her spine, she couldn't eat her soft poos. With hindsight I think she may have missed valuable nutrients and I wish I'd force fed them to her. That may be something to consider with the lovely Darcy.

BTW, Totti is on permanent Meloxydil (same as Metacam) now and has been so for the past 7 months. If it gives them pain free quality of life, that outweighs the risks (in my humble opinion)

:lol: I won't tell him you said that!! But yes he is

He has just had a drink and a fenugreek crunchie.

I'm going to go back to my normal vet and see what she says as I'm not leaving Darcy for 7 days of pain. I couldn't use my normal vet for the xrays and teeth as they wanted £300-400 just for the teeth! So I took him to RSPCA for the treatment. I try not to go if I can help it as they further away but they are far more affordable for the big things. I just hope my normal vet agrees to Darcy being on long term metacam as when he doesn't have it he really does hop/walk weirdly and its obviously down to the pain. He is reaching his botty okay for poop and cleaning. He does have trouble scratching his ears - but again with metacam this is easier.

I would refer them to page 322 of Frances harcourt-brown's textbook of rabbit medicine, which specifically talks about the use of long term painkillers such as meloxicam (metacam) for spinal disease such as spondylosis. Gently remind them, perhaps, that fhb is the country's only rcvs registered rabbit specialist and they can probably therefore follow her recommendation with confidence.

My cat has spondylosis and is on daily metacam and it has made a huge difference to her quality of life, when actually I hadn't even realised how much it had been affecting her. Pain in spondylosis can also make the condition worsen more quickly so I would definitely insist, and if they still won't do it, I would change vets to one that will.

Good luck x
