Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Eye Problem

My bunny has running sticky eyes and would appreciate any suggestions

He is a rescue bunny which i got when he was about 6 months old he is now 2 years old but has always had problems with his eyes.

At first it was just one eye then both. The vets gave me some eye drops as she thought it was conjunctivitis and it seem to clear up a little (about 1 year ago).

I recently moved back to my parents which seemed to really upset him and resulted in him stopping eating after a worried trip to the vets we established that his back teeth were a little overgrown and although that wasnt the reason for him not eating he had them cut down, i hoped that this would resolve the eye problem but it seems worse than ever. His eyes dont appear sore or red and it is a white coloured stick substance which is coming out.

Can rabbits get Hayfever??? or could it be a bad case of conjunctivitis?

My other bunny cleans them all the time for him which could be making it worse but normally her cleaning them tends to make it a little better but only for a few hours.

He was an indoor only bunny but now is outside (they are in a hutch but get to run out in a huge garden up to 2 hours a day and are eating my parents plants and grass which isnt going down very well!!!) so could this change be a factor?

Any help or advice would be gratefully received

It may be that his tooth ROOTS are elongated and pressing on the nasolacrimal ducts. The only way to diagnose tooth root elongation is by having skull radiographs taken.

When he had his Dental were radiographs taken and did the vet flush out his nasolacrimal ducts ?
