  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Stressed rabbit?

New Kit
I and my wife have got a rabbit, her name is Daisy. She is 2years 7months old. We have had very tough time with her since Saturday. Basically, she stopped eating for no reason so we took her to our local vet clinic. They previously thought that it would be a gut statis. She has been given quite a lot medication to help her to move stuff in her digestive system etc. As she has not improved so we decided to leave her in vet clinic in the critical care. However, our vet did the x-ray, urine & blood test....and all negative how weird is that? She started eating a bit, only grass though and bit hay but she has still problem to pass the droppings. She does not go to the toilet that often as she used to. Our vet says that it is probably stress related kind of thing. Please, can anybody give an advice what to do with this? We have spent £450 on veterinary fees and nobody knows what to do with her. :(

Very sorry to hear this :( Did the vet check her teeth?

Is she speyed?

Has she been given pain relief?

Stopping eating is very often a symptom of something else - a good vet will try and ascertain what the cause is as well as deal with the symptoms.

These could be all sorts of things - teeth problems, or any other pain elsewhere.

Are you in UK? If so I would suggest you post a thread asking for a rabbit savvy vet close to you. Most vets are very poor with rabbits as until very recently they were regarded as not worth learning about and vet training in rabbits is poor unless you have a specialist.

Hi, thanks for your posts.

yes, the vet checked her teeth, they are fine and she has been given pain relief as well. She is not speyed...do you think that this could cause these problems?

yes, we have been living in the UK over 4 years. our doctor is fantastic, we think that she has been doing her best...obviously as any diagnostic test have not shown anything...that is even worse to find where the problem is...:(

She has been x-rayed & no signs of a blockage or gas?

Is she still having pain relief?

I agree with parsnipbun, worth asking for vet recommendations near to you. Won't do any harm.

yes, she has been x-rayed and it hasnt shown any signs of gas or blockage at all, she has been given an injection this morning as a pain relief and sent home after 2 days spent in the vet just now.

do you think that these problems could be caused by hormones...as she is not speyed?

I'm afraid I don't know the signs of uterine cancer but this is something you could ask about?

Try tempting her with fresh grass, herbs, finely chopped/grated veg (small amounts) & if you can get some: dandelion, bramble & hawthorn. The latter two are particularly good for settling tummies & often get buns eating again.

ok, we will try to feed her with grass, hay and a bit fresh veg & hope that she will get better...

I'm sorry I can't offer any more advice as you've eliminated the things I know a little about and so can't suggest anything else. There are people on here with a far greater knowledge of rabbits than I & so hopefully someone will be along soon to offer some other suggestions. I would def. consider talking to another vet though, even if you don't take her it you could explain over the phone what has happened so far and see what they say?

ETA: Assume the vet checked her back teeth i.e. her molars and not just the front? There is also a possibility that she has root issues - these would only show up on an x-ray. It's just a process of elimination I think :(
