  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

How can I tell?

Hi Everyone! Im new to the forum but would like some advice if possible. I have recently adopted an 18 month old girl bunny who the previous owners claim was spayed. My question is - Is there anyway I could tell if this had been done? Im taking her to the vets this week for a check up so i assume they could tell?? Thanks in advance Jx:wave:

A surgical scar may be visible or the Vet could do an abdominal ultrasound

A blood test to check reproductive hormone levels is another option I think.

I'm still not sure about the blood test to date? Last time I asked they hadn't isolated the correct hormone in rabbits? I don't know if this has changed? It also would involve several blood tests I think - one to inject the hormone to try and stimulate another to then check at another test :? FSH and LH and all of that I think? :?

My vet felt thickened scar tissue on our rabbit Poppy when we adopted her which indicated she had been spayed.

I'm sure I remember Marie on here saying that ultrasound was the current reliable method as Jane says. :)

Some Exotics Vetlabs can do it :)
