  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Balding/Hair loss underneath ears.

Wise Old Thumper
Today I was grooming Lois and under both ears she has lost a lot of her fur. It has soft downy hair, much like baby hair but that is it and it is on both ears.

I initially thought mites but there is no scabby skin or flakes that I can see nor does it appear to be bothering her. Could it be purely down to the fact she is having a very heavy moult and as this area must, in a sense, rub against her back (she's a helicopter and has very expressive ears that are all over the show) this has promoted more hair loss.

Help please

sorry I don't know the answer but bumping it up for you in the hope someone comes along with an answer.

I have the same problem on my dwarf lop Adelle and I don't know the answer either. However, Adelle's occured shortly after her jab and I wondered whether it was a reaction to the jab. Has your rabbit been recently vaccinated? Or as it's under the ears I wondered whether it was due to the heat a few weeks ago?

P.S. I phoned my vet and they said that as long as the skin is not sore, and is not itchy etc. then not to worry - if any of this changed then I needed to take her up to the vet.
