Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Tear duct issue

Hi. I already have a rabbit who has major dental problems and hasn't got long left to live but his brother who he lives with has never had any tooth problems at all and started getting watery eyes. We did ask at the vets when we took the dental rabbit for a check up and the vet told us that it is probably a blocked tear duct. We had some eye drops for the dental rabbit (who doesn't need them now as the problem has been found and the vet said the drops won't do anything) and got told to give him them and next week he may need to be booked in for a tear duct flush.

I was wondering, do rabbits sneeze when there tear ducts are blocked and is it a sign of future dental problems? He has never had any dental trouble before but i am worried he may get the same dental trouble as his brother. Although we have felt around his jaw and not found any abnormalities so we don't think it is a molar problem and he has been eating well. I just want to find out all the possiblities. It may simply be a blocked tear duct, can rabbits get allergies? We've always used the same sawdust and hay etc. I have noticed that since the recession the sawdust and hay has been a little more dusty than usual could that have caused the tear duct blockage?

I just want to have my mind at rest from worrying about him too. We've already lost 2 rabbits this year and are about to lose a third to this dental thing. I'm hoping he doesn't have the same thing and it is something curable.

Without a skull Xray it is impossible to say if the tear duct problem is Dental related or not. Elongated tooth ROOTS can cause both blocked tear ducts and constant sneezing as the elongated roots can press on the tear ducts and/or penetrate the nasal cavities. If a secondary bacterial infection sets in then the ocular discharge becomes cloudy white and there may be a thick white nasal discharge too.

So I would want the possibility of ETR to be investigated, especially given that the Rabbit's brother has Dental Disease.
