Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Continue on Baytril or try other antibiotic?

Young Bun
As I said in another thread almost 2 weeks ago, my baby rabbit has an ear infection and has been being treated with Baytril for the past two weeks.

He has shown absolutely no improvment yet :( Does anyone have any idea should I wait longer and see what happens, or try a different antibiotic?

My vet wouldn't have that much experience with rabbits, like most vets, that's why I'm asking here.

My friend had two rabbits with ear infections, one got better in a week with Baytril, but the other one also needed a shot of penicillin once a week, because she didn't respond to Baytril.

Anyone with any experience and what did you do? I'm thinking I should try the penicillen maybe . . .

I've no experience of ear infections but I would of thought there are probably some other antibiotics you could try. My vet always likes to reserve penicillin as a last result as despite the fact ots of people on here seem to use it ok there are some risks to the gut. I'm sure someone will be along soon with some suggestions. I could name lots of antibiotics but not sure which are good for ear infections.

Have you had a swab taken?
Is the ear wet?
Is it worth trying topical antibiotics?
If you feel you vet is struggling maybe ask for a referral to your local bun specialist or start a thread on here entitled "wanted, rabbit savvy vet in xxxxx"

Good luck xxx

maybe give it a another week? how bad is it? if very bad then i would say not baytril. are you syringing or in water?

personally, i havent had any success with baytril but this is only related to abscesses, although i didnt know it at the time.

Nope, no swab taken, the ear looks fine but the vet looked in it and said there was pus, she advised against a topic antibiotic too. I live in Ireland and where I am there are no rabbit savvy vets at all! There are some up the country but they're very far away.

Good news, yesterday the bunny was much much better. He's not falling over, he's running around the cage and all. So the vet said to just continue with the Baytril seeing as he is improving. :)

And this morning the bunny is even standing up and stretching and can drink out of his water bottle again :D He's running around the cage so much, I'll have to let him out on the floor for exercise I think :)
