Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Pasturella

I took in a very frightened little neddy 2 months ago, he is snuffly. I have tried all the usual, septrin, baytril. Anyone tried penicillin injections? I cannot get him healthy enough to risk vaccinate, let alone neuter, but he is enjoying his life for the first time, even though I cannot give him enough!

I am waiting an answer from my vets, but just wondered if anyone here has tried.

Hi Alice

I've had good results from using Tribrissen (via injection) and Zithromax (oral solution) for snuffles. Don't think I've ever used penicillin for snuffles, but I've had good results using it for stuff like abscesses, which I suppose are often caused by the same bacteria as snuffles.

I have had numerous Rabbits who have been treated with Depocillin for URTIs amongst other things.

With 'Snuffles' it is usually necessary to try a multi-faceted approach to treatment. This may include:

Skull Xrays to establish if Dental Disease is involved (elongated tooth roots which have penetrated the nasal passages-very likely in a Nethie)

Deep nasal swabs to try to establish the exact bacteria involved (it is not ALWAYS Pasteurella) then the most appropriate abx can be prescribed.

Administering abx by several routes- systemic, via a nebuliser, via direct application of eye/nose drops

Giving a mucolytic (Bisolvon) to thin out the mucus secretions

Systemic anti-inflammatories (Metacam) to reduce soft tissue inflammation in the nasal passages

Echinecea may help boost the Bun's immune system

Often treatment needs to go on for a long time, months rather than weeks. Relapses can occur, especially at times of stress.

Everything Jane & Amy said.

I've used depocillin in a large dose for a good period with good results, but unfortunately it just didnt clear it up totally, so are now trying Zithromax (Azithromycin) with metacam, with a view to nebulising F10 if this does not work as well.

We are trying penicillin injections soon for Bluebell. If you are worried you could ask your vet about giving metronidazole along side it as it helps protect the gut.

Hi Guys,

Thank you for your replies. Yes, I must admit one of my major concerns is dental. I am dusting off my nebuliser, but he is such a frightened little chap I am worried the stress of the noise may cause more harm than good.

I hate having these cases at the rescue. I always feel it takes me so long to find the time to give it my best shot! I am currently trying to fit in 2 rabbits who are fighting in a garden and tearing chunks off each other!

I have a vet visiting today and am trying to squeeze him in with a rabbit specialist vet on Saturday. Trouble is, I already have the appointment jam packed, I will get my pretty blonde friend to flutter her eyelashes at him!

We used penicillin as a last resort for my rabbit that had abscesses..... She went dopey for a day but recovered and her abscesses healed too.

Our vet said it was a 'kill or cure' last resort, as penicillin isnt too great for buns.

Good luck with the poor chap! X

Hope things improve I was injecting Frank every third day. Metacam and septrin. Let me know if there is anything I can do.
