  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Neutering questions

Hiya guys, I am looking to have Charlie neutred soon, so that then I can hopefully bond him with a rescue bun so he has a friend, but the thought of sending him to the vets is actually making me nervous! So I
was just wondering if you could answer me a few questions-
what does the operation involve?
What are the side effects?
Once he is home, is he fine to go back to normal?
How long will he roughly have to stay at the vets?
Finally, how much roughly will it cost?

Sorry for all the questions! Thanks in advance! X

It's nerve wracking I know but you are doing the right thing. :D There's some useful info about neutering here:

Cost varies greatly; my vet charges around £50 I think, maybe a bit more now. It's important that you use a rabbit savvy vet for the procedure - this post may be useful if you are unsure: http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/showthread.php?t=267127

Charlie will most likely be admitted on the morning of the op, and you're normally asked to ring sometime in the afternoon to see how the op went. If all is well and he is eating & recovering well from the anaesthetic (sp?) then he will be allowed home that evening; if not then the vet may want to keep him there overnight.

If he's an outdoor bunny, he will need to be kept in for the first night at least as he will have trouble regulating his body temperature after the GA.
