Snuffles Advice

whitehood

Warren Veteran
Lucky has a respiratory infection at the moment.. Is this 'Snuffles' or will it later on become snuffles if not healed?

I know snuffles cannot be treated but if it is eliminated quite early ,then will it be cured, or it wont?

Is a risk to bond Lucky with another rabbit until his infection doesn't clear up ?

Hi Whitehood, sorry to hear that Lucky has an infection.

My bun Bunny has snuffles too. Unfortunately, his is quite ingrained and we have not been able to eliminate it from him, but as he is stable with it, on my vet's advice we do not treat unless it worsens.

I hope that someone with a bit more knowledge on this can advise you properly, as I have to admit that I have heard/read varying opinions on this. Some people say that it is highly contagious, but others say the bacteria is in all buns, but some are more susceptible to the symptoms (eg if their immune systems is compromised, or due to stress etc).

I ALWAYS work with my vet with Bunny's snuffles, and go by his advice. I would be really interested to read other people's advice to you on this, though, as there will be people on RU who have dealt with snuffles a lot and have a better idea about it.

ETA: I should have said that Bunny's snuffles has been around for a long while, and it is entirely probably that with Lucky, as you have just caught it, the symptoms can be nicely controlled by the abx. I just realised my post sounded a bit doom and gloom, and I don't think this reflects Lucky's situation at all! Do you have treatment for Lucky from your vet?

Thanks, I know Jenova's Grim has snuffles and he's bonded with smoo and she hasn't got it

I fed Lucky his first dose of baytril today
He sneezed twice .. And has a tiny bit of white discharge
Is it to early to think the baytril isn't helping :?

I think you need to give it a few days at least before you notice even a small change. Courses of baytril for us have lasted usually about 2 weeks.

I always find the term 'snuffles' a bit generic, or slang if you like. There are lots of different respitory conditions, pastrella, bordatella etc.

I have two buns who've had mild respitory infections that needed no treatment and has never reoccured.

I also have a bunny who has long term respitory issues and has been on meds for over a year.

It is often really helpful to ask your vet to do a culture and sensitivity test as this should hopefully tell you exactly what the infection is and hopefully narrow down which antibiotics work best.

How long has he been on baytril? There is alot of bad press about baytril but its kept Bluebell comfortable for several months now when neither septrin or alamycin touched it so you shouldn't be put off trying it.

We are now going to try the penicillin route as recommended by a specialist.

Regards to bonding, Bluebells partner has never had respitory probs, nor have any of the other buns in fairly close proximity. You should note though that stress can be a huge factor in respitory buns so the bonding itself may put a strain on Lucky.

K thanks for the advice all
Lucky's been on Baytril since the 27th and the vet recommended I should give 1 (forgot what units) in the syringe twice daily.

Did your vet give you a probiotic for him? If not it may be an idea to get some as sometimes antibiotics can upset a bunnies tum.
