separated my buns...what now?

Alpha Buck
I've had to separate polly and matilda just days before neutering. What do i do now? Im gutted  polly chased matilda and mounted her and pulled out her fur... what do i do now before and after their ops tues? Do i still ask the vet to keep them together at all times?

Thanks in advance

Sorry . :) Can you add a bit more detail as to why you seperated? Humping and fur pulling is just dominance behaviour (obviously the hormones are kicking in :) ) but unless there is genuine aggression not grounds to seperate.

thank you,
well i am abit confused by it to be honest... it is always polly that chases matilda and it started earlier tonight so we put mesh up in my bedroom so they had a breather for abit... and then we took it down and Polly just went straight for Matilda to hump her. i dont think polly is biting her or anything its just humping but matilda does not like it obviously..
normally they are all cuddly and grooming eachother
its just like i never have experienced this before so im concerned

Difficult one- how long have they been apart now?

I'd have left them together, but now they have been apart awhile it may not be a good idea to put them together until after neutering. I take it they are siblings.

they have been apart for about two hours now really
they aren't related but they were socialised at 8 weeks and haven't been apart since ( i know pet shop buns:oops:)
Matilda even though she does not like being chased etc seems to be pining for Polly abit now

Only two hours- i'd supervise put them back together and hope for the best. Can you keep them with you overnight until they are due in at the vets?

What age are they now?

yes i can keep them in my bedroom is that would be better. they are getting on to about 5 months. i wanted to wait a tad longer you see to make sure that Matilda is the right age as she is either really small for a dwarf lop or a mini lop, the shop couldve got it wrong.. thanks for your help
im going to try and supervise them for a bit now :)

If there is any risk the shop could have got the sex wrong i'd seperate immediately and wait to put together after neutering.

If they are definately both girlys then i'd keep together and keep a close eye until the op and afterwards. The op will sedate them both and should instill bonding on a deeper level if they go in for it together.

Hopefully everything will work out just fine, but if it gets to heavy fighting instead of just scuffling- i'd seperate and then wait until after neutering to rebond.

Hope that helps :)

yes thank you, they are deffo girlies :)
a little bit of chasing is happening at the moment but i dont think theres any aggressiveness intended

In my opinion, you are better to separate them but still allow them to see each other through wire, swap litter trays daily and once neutered leave 2 weeks for re-hab and then re-bond.

In my experience, once hormones kick in, then a fight can result in nasty injuries and make a re-bond almost impossible.

even if polly is still grooming matilda now while im watching? im really confused because i don't have anything to compare to. Polly is chasing matilda, not biting her or anything, still grooming her:?

If she's grooming then thats fine. With my 2 girls who are 3 now Tilly still bosses Cheeky around which sometimes does involve a bit of fur pulling. But as Julia says, if she is actually harming Matilda, then yes seperate.
TBH it does sound as though Polly is just trying to be the dominant doe.

yeah she is a bossy cow sometimes  proper headbutts my feet to get me outta the way. i just cant wait till they can be neutered, btw polly is making like a weird grunting noise i havent heard before. does anyone know what this is?

Its so hard to tell without having experienced the fall out. In this case then you need to watch them closely and be prepared to separate if a fight breaks out. Not easy given the time of night. So you may have to stay up with them and supervise... I do have to state this is just my opinion and I always err on the side of caution having had two young bucks (one neutered and one about to be) who did each other terrible injuries in 5 mins while my back was turned.

The grunting noise is hormonal dominance.

i will keep an eye on them, i mean i seperated them only for two hours and eventhough matilda does not like being chased she seems hellbent on being close to her. im really concerned because she is a kg lighter than Polly.i know it will take a few weeks for their hormones to level out after the operation but initially how optimistic can i be for after the operation if i keep them together?

Both of mine went in together for their op and when they came out they were kept together but didn't move much for about 36 hours. As they started to get with it again they were fine. It's not all been perfect. Cheeky is a dental bun and has had to go in twice for GA's twice and both times the bond has been broken but they have been re bonded succesfully both times. With girls I think it's a lot easier than boys. Polly clearly means to be top dog and that will probably always be the case given size and weight. Tilly always comes to Cheeky for a snuggle even when she's chased her from something she thinks is hers lol. So be optimistic :)

aaw that sounds nice that it looks optimistic.. there is no doubt that there will always be one top dog though. i've heard horrible things about bucks bonding badly poor things.. i really hope it works out... sounds like Tilly is the cheeky one :D
