  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Very dry, hard skin in my rabbits ears.

Alpha Buck
Willow is my 13week old flemish giant girl. We have her since she was over 8 weeks old, and got her the 8th of May.

We noticed when we got her that she shook her ears a little bit. We just thought that it was just her ways as her ears looked very clean. The shaking may of gotton slighlty worse since getting her.

But just today I was holding her and looked in her ears and very deep in she has very dry skin, I don't mean like dandruff but just very dry hard clumps of dry skin deep into the ear. I tried to remove a bit for a closer look with a cotton bud ( don't worry I was careful) but it wouldn't flake off so I couldn't.

I don't have a picture of it, may be able to get one tomorrow evening depending on if I get my camera back tomorrow, if not then it will be Sunday morning.

But what does everyone think it could be?

Had another look at it.

Could it be a built up of wax in her ears? Would this go all hard? If so how do I clean it or will I need to bring her to the vet? Or could it be an infection? How could I tell the difference?

I would get her to a Vet as a full examination of her ears using an otoscope is required

She may have ear mites which can lead to a nasty secondary bacterial infection

Please dont poke a cotton bud into the ear canal, you could do serious and irreparable damage. Also, if it is mites it is extremely painful for the Rabbit if you try to pick off the hard debris.

I know I shouldn't but I wanted to see was it hard or what. I was very careful. It isn't actually down the ear canal but sort of to the side.
Thank you very much for your answer.
I shall book an appointment for her at the vets, next week.
