  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sore Hocks

I now there are loads of threads on here reference sore hocks but what would be the best form of attack if the rabbit is getting them presumable from long periods of inactivity as a result of his other health issues? He's already on antibiotics but they are nebulised so presumably wont help his feet at all but oral meds don't touch his respitory issues. What should I be asking my vet?

Thats the prob Gray, he's outdoors with a permanently attached run. I can put deep bedding in the hutch no prob, but its the run thats the prob. Its on the patio as grass would just turn to mud in the rain and anything could dig in and out. I have some rubber matting but I'm wondering about drainage. Would the rain just puddle on top the mats?

My rabbit, Molly has sore hocks. She hasn't had a flare-up for nearly 2 years because she's bedded on thick hay in her hutch and run. Its hard work using hay in the run, especially if your rabbits aren't litter trained (like mine) and it needs to be kept dry and clean to stop infection in the hocks, and I find that the hay needs to be changed every month or so because it turns to dust. I have a 7ft x 5ft run and when its changed, I use around 4kg to fill the floor. New hay is added daily as I clean out soiled hay.

If you need any help with this solution, just PM me. it took me a while to figure out how to keep the hay dry during rainy spells. :)

You can get a screwdriver and make little holes for drainage. They are not too big so will no hinder any movement from the buns.
Just a thought as Oberon has the beginning of sore hocks too.
