  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

sneezing

Thumper has had this weird sneezing thing since about 2 weeks after we had him.
He sneezes and sneezes for a few seconds and sometimes a clear snotty type discharge comes out.
I took him to the vet and she said it sounded like an upper respiritory problem and put him on antibiotics..they didnt seem to change anything so when i took him back she said that as he is not ill/off his food/lethargic (in any way!!naughty boy)and is drinking plenty she wouldnt want to give more meds as it could do more harm that good in a rabbit his age (6mths).

but that was about 5 weeks ago now and hes still sneezey:?.he seems totally normal in every other way eating/drinking/binkying like a mad thing but should i be worried and take him back?I dont want ot be neglecting him.

could it be some sort of allergy?ive tried varying his bedding incase it was that, keeping him in incase it was something in the garden but there doesnt seem any pattern.

Any ideas?

I would consider tooth root/Dental issues then. Even at just 6 months of age.

Lops and lionheads are both prone to congenital Dental problems due to the shape of their skull. The shape is shorter and more rounded than is seen in uppy eared Rabbits, whose skull shape is much more like that of a wild Rabbit. So a cross breeding of a Lionhead and a Mini Lop is probably not the brightest of ideas.

I would discuss this with a Rabbit Savvy Vet

Good Luck :)

Also consider a general infection/RTI, a C&S may be necessary to determine if an infection is causing this  That way, the vet would know which ABx to test with. What ABx are you trying at the moment, i assume Baytril?

the vet gave him a series of 2 injection antibiotics but it was about 5 weeks ago so i cant remember now what they were.He isnt currently on anything.Could it be an infection even though he is happy and behaving normally?
