Why is he STILL sneezing

Pebblesetc

Mama Doe
Buckley has basically been on septrin ever since we got him 2 months ago. He's just come off it and is having sneezing fits again :(
Why won't it work :( It isn't fair, he's done nothing to deserve this :(

Is it possible he could be allergic to something in his cage? Do you use sawdust? (This can cause respiritory problems as well as cause alleric reactions) Also do you ue any cage cleaners? Maybe try experimenting with different hay too as some of it can be very dusty which would cause sneezing

Welcome to my world. Bluebell has been on various meds for almost a year. It might be worth leaving Buckly of meds for a week or so and asking the vet to do a culture and sensitivity test so you can find out exactly what infection he has and what meds are appropriate.

We had no luck with Septrin either. You could try an oxytetracyline.

have you had culture tests done to see what antibiotics the bacteria are susceptible to?

Remember that, sadly, snuffles is uncurable.

My Barney only sneezes about once a day now but still has runny eyes most days, the vet reckons he will have to be on Bisolvon more or less permenantly.

Could it be an allergy? My bun Bunny sneezes a lot. We know now that it's pasteurella but before, my vet had suggested it could be a hay allergy or something like that. I'm not really sure how you would tell...by ruling out other causes I guess. Has he had a nasal swab?

Oh hun I know how you feel :( Have you had a vet check for anything in his nose? I took Hopscotch to a specialist and he found an abscess which we are now trying to cure and hoping that when it's gone the sneezing will stop

We only line his cage with newspaper, and use paper based litter in his litter trays :(
I use a non-perfumed pet safe cage cleaner and always air his trays and stuff before giving them back to him.

It's just so frustrating because the sneezing really distresses him.

PS. had the same thing with antibiotics... when he was on them his nose would clear up and he'd be less sneezy, and as soon as he stopped them he'd get really bad again :(

Not yet. We're trying to get an appointment with the rabbit superhero at our vets. Hopefully he'll know what we can do.

That's exactly it. He's fine when he's on them, then literally 24 hours after the final dose he's sneezing incessantly.

I would say it's def worth going for an x-ray if your vet suggests it, otherwise we would still be trying to clear it up with antibiotics that weren't working! It's expensive, but if it shows something up, it'll make it worthwhile.

helennnnnn do you mind if I ask how your vet found an absess? Was it and xray or an internal exam under GA? Was it actually inside the nasal cavity?

berties swab said his was reactive to baytril amongst others....so the vets have had him on baytril on and off ever since!!

finally earlier this year the vets gave bertie a six week course of depocillin jabs every 5 days...he cleared up lovely..but not cured..it can never be cured...just damp the symptoms down.

bertie finally got some bisolvon too........it helped loads.......and just recently he had a horrific downward turn...:(:(

the vet gave him a jab of alamycin and i carried on with bisolvon twice daily...the jab helped a lot....then he had another one 3 days later...amazing response. the vet said only to bring him in for another one if he got super snuffly again.

bertie had piriton pills at one point and it helped the rhinitis.......but now hes sneezing still....and ive given him bisolvon yesterday and today......

he needs to go back on antbx sadly....and i need to discuss the long term with the vet.

i hear of many folks who say the septrin cured their bunny....sadly if something really cured it..wed all have our buns on it!! perhaps the septrin works like the depocillin and alamycin combined with the bisolvon. Seems to work 100%..then within 24hrs the sneezing starts and within weeks/months the pasturella flares up AGAIN.

i hope all goes ok.

We use bisolven alot too.

Alamycin had no effect on Bluebell at all.

We also used piriton as he does have allergies to pollen so this time of year is hell for us even before he started getting proper infections.

Nothing grew on our c&s test so its all a bit of a guessing game for us.

He was put under GA and had an x-ray and nasal scope. I guess it's in the nasal cavity... but I'm not sure, I never asked!

Currently being treated with flushing his nose out under GA every week or 2 and on antibiotics. He's been back and forth to the vets several times and on Monday he said it does look like it's clearing up. There was talk of trying to surgically remove it, but he really didn't want to if he didn't have to. But after seeing him on Monday he said we wouldn't go for that yet.

Thanks. Did he ever get any discharge? If so was it one or both sides? Sorry to be nosey but considering further investigations for Bluebell.

Yup it was so bad when it first started that my original vet thought he was going to die  She thought it was Pasteurella. It's always just been the one nostril and he'd get a damp nose on that side. It's just because the abscess is obviously filling up with pus and that's what he's sneezing out. My original vet couldn't do x-rays or anything so that's when they referred me to an exotic specialist who found the abscess. It had been about 4 months of antibiotics up until that point, which like I said earlier, would appear to clear it up but then when stopped, it would start up again.

Poor boy, either way i hope you (all of you) find a way to cure your buns, or just make them more comfortable :)

Welcome to the world of buns with respiratory issues. :(

Has he been on any other Abx?

I personally would ask the vet to perform a C&S Swab of Buckley, to see what kind of infection it was. That way, they can deem which ABx the bacteria is susceptible to.

If it makes you feel any better, Ginger's been on ABx for ~two thirds of her entire life so far. We've had Baytril, Septrin, Depocillin and now i fear, we'll be changing over to Zithromax as advised by Richard Saunders, of Langford Vets, one of THE rabbit vets in the UK.

She's also on daily metacam - it might be worth asking your vet if metacam is an option, as its an anti-inflammatory, which may help.

They've been reluctant to try him on baytril because he's still growing and they felt that the risks to his skeletal growth outweigh the potential benefits of the drug, what with it's low success rate with snuffles.
I will make note of C&S and metacam and ask the vet when we see him :)
Thanks :)
