hi
Sam has heart and kidney failure and has been doing well until the past few days. his breathing is very laboured and his appetite has gone off. We have upped his frusimide diuretic to hopfully get the fliud from his chest but I did wonder if a nebuliser would help or is this just for respiotory problems. Is there anything else i could do to make him more comfortable. He is also recieving fortekor. He's due back at the vet tomorrow but i am thinking of taking him back today but not sure if there is anything they can do for him that i'm not already doing.

I am really sorry but I don't think a nebuliser would help.
To be honest if he is on diuretics it is not a good sign, certainly with my renal cats the vets try to avoid using those because it puts more strain on the kidneys. The fortekor should help his heart and kidneys, but I'm not sure what more can be done.:(

Sadly at end stage HF the drugs just dont work, or at least become much less effective

I very much doubt that nebulising will help. Oxygen therapy may give temporary relief. But is unlikely to give longterm benefit at end stage

I am sorry Sam is not getting as much benefit from the frusemide and fortekor.

As Jane said, the drugs seem to lose their effectiveness as the disease progresses. It is very sad seeing them struggle with heart conditions. I hope Sam can be made as comfortable as possible.:(

I am really sorry to hear about bun, I am afraid though that once the fortekor cannot hold it then there is nothing really that can be done - just making them as comfortable as possible - at the very end stage (a day or so eft) my vet recommended valium as it lessens the anxiety caused by the problem.

thanks everyone. We had lessened his directic over the past few weeks as we didn't want to damage the kidneys anymore and he seemed to be managing ok with this. We upped it again on tuesday as he was laboured again and I put him back on full strength last night and he hasn't got any worse today. I just have to hope that they start to help soon:( I know theres nothing I can do i just hope this is a set back and he can get back on track. I don't think the hot weather is helping either. He has been so happy and active since he was diagnoised back in march...I just hope its not coming to the end just yet:cry:
